catgate
Nevertheless, prisoners should be properly fed, given exercise and the opportunity for training and learning. The aim should be not solely punishment but also re-habilitation.They should also provide funds to keep themselves, their dependants and recompense their victims whilst in jail. They would have to provide funds for their own keep and their dependants if the were not in jail. The only way they can do this is by working. This should give them exercise. If they do not exercise enough they will not be fed, because their victims come first followed by their dependants. There is also an assumption that the harsher the treatment the less re-offending. Where is the long term evidence for this? Thos. (newly promoted Brigadier, PC & BH)How about Saddam's iraq. Or even the UK prior to the start of the nanny state (pre 1945).(Please do not get too PC, Thos., or you may be forced into being a Rear Admiral!) Watchful
I'm not a member of any brigade and, although I think prisoners should be treated humanely, they should not have privileges and should be given work to do or training to equip them for the outside world. If re-habilitation is not possible then they should remain in custody or in a mental health unit if their particular personality warrants it. rong
A point in the pot, I think it's somewhere around Saudi (that area), that they are very harsh on criminals, and have very little crime.
Alan2273
Thos, I did not state that you were a representative for the PC or bleeding heart brigade, I just said that I disagreed with your opinion, which you are quite entitled to have.As far as treating the prisoners humanely, why should we when they do not treat there victims with any humanity at all.The law in Britian is on the side of the criminal not the victim. With the laws that protect the criminals rights in this country we must be the laughing stock of the world. It looks as though some of them might be about to benefit from it!

gordythegouge
I have to work exceedingly long hours (12 hour shifts), rotating weekly between dayshift and nightshift, there's no ball and chain around my ankle, it's just that I know that if I want food, a roof over my head, a TV,, and indeed any sort of entertainment at all, then I have to work for it. I'm rapidly reaching an age (nearly 54) when I find the whole treadmill a bloody inconvenience, especially when I have a round trip of 50 miles each day to and from my work! It really goes against the grain, to read of satellite tv, pool tables, etc., being part of what is surely supposed to be a punishment. Punishment for who? The taxpayer probably! I for one, applaud anyone with gumption, to make life as unbearable as possible for convicted felons (within the bounds of the Geneva Convention of course) so that they can take the lifechanging decision, not to re-offend, as so many of them do. When I see what some of the Local teenagers do around here for laughs, including making life completely miserable for some of the weakest members of our society, it makes me want to turn vigilante, and that has to be wrong! The Penal system of the States and here, is failing the ones it should be protecting, ie Mr Average Joe Bloggs! No.....maybe what the Sheriff is doing doesn't appeal to everyone....but he is trying to make a difference! Me.....I would bring back the birch!! I agree with you and probably millions more do as well. The judicial system has failed us all in the UK as there are no deterrents anymore. In some cases I too would bring back corporal punishment. :(

andsome
It would appear then that the majority so far on this forum consider the laws regarding the treatment of violent yobs in this country to be a total ASS.
Thos
How about Saddam's iraq. Or even the UK prior to the start of the nanny state (pre 1945).How could anyone disagree that Saddam's opponents rarely re-offended. They ended up in a mass grave. I haven't got the facts, I am afraid about prison conditions and the effect on crime levels pre and post war.Thos, I did not state that you were a representative for the PC or bleeding heart brigade, I just said that I disagreed with your opinion, which you are quite entitled to have. No, Alan2273, I know you didn't. The PC etc. brigade was referred to in an earlier post and I volunteered to be Brigadier, unpaid, to put an alternative point of view.It would appear then that the majority so far on this forum consider the laws regarding the treatment of violent yobs in this country to be a total ASS. Yes, you are right. I am in a minority of one on this forum. I offered my opinion because, going right back to the title of the thread, a load of garbage (in my view anyway) by Sheriff Joe, was put up under the heading "I wish the UK would follow this lead"Well, I don't want to revert to chain gangs and primitive, barbaric ways of treating men and women.Thos. rong
Thos. (Brigadier, unpaid, soon to be Rear-Admiral) That's aright as it's now legal so you will not be sent to a holiday camp. I don't think that chain gangs are right, but I do think that prisons should be a punishment, If the conditions were harder some of the first time law breakers would not want to return. I also think that prisoners should not have more than the rest of us, which at the moment they seem to have. They should also be treated humanly, even if that is not how they treated their victims.
