Somewhere in the depths of our photographic archive, we have a B&W photo of me, thinking I was the star of that beautiful ballet!! Not the music, just the dancing. I dont want a cheque ta. :DIf you listened extensively to larger scale music you would detect a significant difference in performances of the same work. The musicians don't just play the music as it is written down, and hope that it all comes together. The performance reflects the conductors own interpretation of what the composer set down. I can hear the same piece by two different conductors and there is a world of difference. The conductor goes through extensive rehearsals with the orchestra to get the piece to sound as he wants it to. I once bought a record of a piece performed by The Philadelphia Orchestra under Eugine Ormandy, It was to my ear, absolutely awful, and ponderous. Although I could ill afford it at that time, I gave it away and bought the same piece with a different conductor. I really wish that I could sit down with you, and play excerpts from several pieces by different conductors. I just know that you too would appreciate the difference. It is all a matter of interpretation. Smaller groups of musicians of course can put a work together without a conductors guidance. Two of their daughters had birthdays this weekend, Ellie on Saturday and Amy on Sunday. So we took them all out for a meal.
