doubleup Posted January 27, 2007 Report Share Posted January 27, 2007 The last few days whenever I try booting up my pc sometimes it would boot, other time it would hang where Windows logon screen was supposed to come up. This morning it decided it doesn't want to boot up at all and the screen just goes black at the logon screen.I've taken everything out of the case except RAM, CPU, and hard drive I'm going to use - same results.I'd tried different IDE cables - sameI try to enter safe mode and it stalls on mup.sysI try to use the recovery console through my XP cd and it freezes at the "Starting Windows..." I press "F5" to use standard i486 settings and it still freezes...I've cleaned the cd and even used a different cd and it freezes at the same point...I have no clue what else I could do. doubleup Posted January 28, 2007 Author Report Share Posted January 28, 2007 UPDATE: I discovered that where it is 1) hung at the safe mode mup.sys if I plug in my USB printer and then pull it out, it boots into safe mode & 2) where it hung while booting into normal windows (right prior to the logon screen) if I do the same thing it boots into Windows normally. This is probaly a 'red herring'.....When I updated my old Norton AntiVirus to Norton Internet Security 2007, my pc would continually freeze at the Window Logo screen. I could only boot up in safemode! It drove me nuts, so you have my sympathy. :) The matter was only resolved when I ditched Norton completely.If there is no common link for you in this post, I am sure someone with lots more knowledge than me will have better ideas soon.Good luck! ;) Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

doubleup Posted January 28, 2007 Author Report Share Posted January 28, 2007 I don't have Norton on my pc. Possibly a conflict between the USB and another device? I checked the IRQ's and there are some being shared, but no conflicts visible. On a different forum someone suggested I fix my MBR which I don't believe will fix the problem. It's something that has to do with my printer having to be on. I've managed to get the logon screen to come up everytime by moving the USB to a different port and leaving the printer turned on. If I turn the printer off and restart the screen will hang until I turn the printer on. Maybe some drivers got mixed up or something because it happens after Windows loads and "activates". Mine is always off except when in use.I used to leave mine off all the time, but as of late I have to have the printer on in order for the Windows logon screen, safe mode, to come up.
