Spleen venting is a rather tricky operation and should really only be done by a fully trained and qualified person. However, if there is no such person immediately to hand, here are a few helpful hints:-

Never attempt to vent the spleen with it "in situ." It can make an awful mess and, unless a large enough orifice is made, complete venting may be impossible. Therefore always use a Jackson's No.5 Spleenomatic Incisor and take the spleen out carefully. Lay it on a clean piece of newspaper on a level working surface and brush off any debris. The venting can be done directly into a bottle (by means of a funnel) or it can be vented into a bucket first (a plastic one is better than the old galvanised type ...the stones do not rattle as much).

After the venting has been successfully carried out the spleen needs a quick scrub with a clean wire brush and then a thorough scrub in a clean plastic bucket half filled with tepid water to which an eggcupful of turps has been added.

Next replace the spleen on the level surface which should now be covered with a layer of cling film. Sprinkle the spleen with a light dusting of a mixture of Boots Evening Mist talc and a little ground coriander, and then drizzle a little sundried tomato flavoured olive oil over it before folding the cling film over the top of it. Leave it to rest for about an hour whilst you take a walk in the garden or sit down and have a fag, or even do a little light gardening.

After an hour or so simply unwrap the spleen and pop it back.

Andsome... dogs are far more of a nuisance, crapping in the street...!

I fully agree and, being a dog and cat owner, and garden-lover, I am never without my poo-bag

It all boils down to responsible ownership and, as I've said before, my cats use a litter-tray, not the garden.

Lots of nuisance can be caused by garden-owners; BBQs, loud music, overgrowing hedges etc.

So, I see no reason to blame the cat, or dog :flowers:

catgate - a very funny exposition :D

cats crap in flower beds so if you like gardening then you don't get a nice supprise or if you're strimming the lawn and hit some it really isn't plesant, done it a few times!!!

you don't find much dog mess due to owners picking it up, they really don't have as much freedom as cats.

That's why there is now a law making the owner clean up afterwards.

Good for you if your cat uses a litter tray. Unfortunately most don't, and end up crapping in someone else's garden. I agree with the other nuisances that you have mentioned. Unfortunately one of our neighbours has Lleylandii growing alongside one side of our garden. He does cut it now and then, but it is far higher than we would like.

I fully agree with the law compelling dog owners to clean up. I would like to see another law compelling cat owners to keep their animals on their own land. A low voltage electric fence would do the job. :D :D

Perhaps the answer is to have all dogs and cats fitted with zip fasteners up the front (a bit like a pyjama case) and internal dungbags (similar to a vacuum cleaner bag) that can be taken out, emptied and laundered.

The easier alternative is a tight ligature around the neck to prevent swallowing.

Cats are free spirits. Freedom is the greatest thing to possess and I, for one, would not deny them this.

Bet you would like a cat's freedom andsome? and I don't mean doing poos outside, although that is acceptable if you're out on a long-distance country walk

Why should their so called freedom be to the detriment of other peoples enjoyment of a crap free garden?

This may not be wholly fact but, when, as a child I asked my dad why the skinned rabbits, hung up for sale outside the greengrocers, still had their heads on, he told me it was a legal requirement to assure the would be purchaser that they were not moggies.

I remember that myself. :D

I don't wish to know that catgate but their skeletons are very similar or so I am told

andsome - 'Twas ever thus; one cat's freedom is another man's dash for the hosepipe :D

As a solution to your problem, why not erect an electric fence around your property. That should keep 'em out B)

Why should anyone have to go to expense because other people choose to keep semi wild animals? They are not suitable pets in a community, being little better than a damned nuisance.
