Problems re-installing Win 98SE on friends PC

This is my daughters old PC. It had been upgraded with a CDRW and a 17 inch Smile CA6748SL monitor. It was then passed on some retired friends of ours and had since been connected to BB via a BT router. They are new to computing so this was a cheap way of them to explore new territories. But they have been having many problems so I said no problem I'll do a complete re-install so we have a clean sheet - thinking that all the disks were to hand : not so. Anyway before starting I posted the question about getting all the available Win98 updates

Win 98 updates

So I uplifted the PC on Thurs and Fri copied out all the files they wanted keeping. The CDRW was still working at this point. Re-formatted the PC and ran into problems in that it wouldn't recognise the CDRW a Freecom job. So after much head scratching I replaced it with a CD-ROM that I had. Re-installed Windows and the updates. But I can't get it to recognise the Smile monitor. Boris -bless him - sent me a copy of the Smile monitor .inf file which I copied over but I still cannot get the monitor out of the default mode ie. it's still in the 16 bit lowest resolution mode. In device manager it only shows Display adapter - Standard PCI Graphics Adapter (VGA) and Monitors - Default Monitor & Smile CA6748SL. But I still can't get it out of the default display. Any suggestions because I find the screen difficult to read.

Struggling to get the HP Deskjet 840c working. All the downloads referring to this printer are XP related. It used to work on the USB 2 input am just trying to see if I can get it running with a parallel connection.

I thought I had the original CD for that model, - but on checking its for the 640c :(

I did however find a driver which you can download at Driver Guide - called DeskJet840Win95-98-Me.exe

http://members.driverguide.com/driver/deta...?driverid=86955

Click on the link - DeskJet840Win95-98-Me.exe on the page

Select "Download this file by viewing a series of ads"

Continue

Skip

Enter the 3 letters you see in the image into the Download Verification box at the bottom

Select "Your Hard Drive" as download destination

Then click the long thin "Verify, pick destination, then click to download" button.

Yes I thought the original installation disk was in the bundles with the others for the m/c but and a few others were missing - I should have made a full list of what was available before the re-format. Thanks for the new link Boris, will follow up on that tomorrow!
