doug
This is my daughters old PC. It had been upgraded with a CDRW and a 17 inch Smile CA6748SL monitor. It was then passed on some retired friends of ours and had since been connected to BB via a BT router. They are new to computing so this was a cheap way of them to explore new territories. But they have been having many problems so I said no problem I'll do a complete re-install so we have a clean sheet - thinking that all the disks were to hand : not so. Anyway before starting I posted the question about getting all the available Win98 updates Win 98 updatesSo I uplifted the PC on Thurs and Fri copied out all the files they wanted keeping. The CDRW was still working at this point. Re-formatted the PC and ran into problems in that it wouldn't recognise the CDRW a Freecom job. So after much head scratching I replaced it with a CD-ROM that I had. Re-installed Windows and the updates. But I can't get it to recognise the Smile monitor. Boris -bless him - sent me a copy of the Smile monitor .inf file which I copied over but I still cannot get the monitor out of the default mode ie. it's still in the 16 bit lowest resolution mode. In device manager it only shows Display adapter - Standard PCI Graphics Adapter (VGA) and Monitors - Default Monitor & Smile CA6748SL. But I still can't get it out of the default display. Any suggestions because I find the screen difficult to read.
mark2
Standard PCI Graphics Adapter (VGA)looks like you need to install the graphics driver, doug I had the same device listed in a system, in device mangler after adding a new AGP card without installing the drivers. catgate
When I have used http://www.driverguide.com/ in the past all I have done is to feed the detail of the thing (monitor/printer/etc) into the appropriate little boxes and it rushes off and comes back with the goods. doug
Yes I thought the original installation disk was in the bundles with the others for the m/c but and a few others were missing - I should have made a full list of what was available before the re-format. Thanks for the new link Boris, will follow up on that tomorrow!
