...don't forget porridge oats is great attraction with the birds. Robins and Blackbirds love it - either soaked in water or dry.

And grated cheese too :D

They ain't having mine, they get plenty of wild bird food at great cost. :D

I think your Toast thread got highjacked, so we've already had a good gas about them!! :D

The dickie-birds in my garden also like eggs... boiled, poached or fried.

what...Eggs On Toast..!! :D
Certainly do... they do prefer the toast softened under water first though.

We have hoards of Magpies nearby. They have really got it sussed.

They pick up bread of any kind, even if it has dried out. They then take it to the bird bath, dunk it under water and take it to their favourite feasting place!

They definitely have a bird brain!!

Thanks for that info DaVid, I'll try porridge oats. They also like cooked, boiled rice, but so do I :D

You're welcome :) For the birds I use the cheapo value pack from Tesco. For my porridge however, it's the proper jumbo flakes - Jordan's or Dorset Cereals or similar.

(I've now turned this bird feeding thread into a breakfast thread LOL :0 )

... I'll try some currants as we haven't many blackbirds

To encourage blackbirds you could also try apples and/or pear halves. If you have a friendly greengrocer they might give you their apples that they are about to throw away coz they are a bit bruised ;)

Irene feeds the Magpies, so they are used to eating fresh eggs, and young meat from all the other birds she encourages into the garden.
I don't actually feed the Magpies.

To be honest, I find that they are too prolific.

They are very territorial and frighten away some of the smaller birds I would like to encourage. :(

If anyone has any (humane) discouraging practise to advise, I would be delighted to hear from you.

This can be done humanely by closing your eyes just before you pull the trigger. Alternatively, get a man in.

Or even a scud missile.
