Why you DON'T need security software

I've never wrote one of these before, so forgive me if it isn't very good.

Firstly, don't get me wrong - I'm not trying to discourage people from having security installed. Infact, I'd encourage inexperienced users to always have an anti-virus, anti-spyware and a firewall installed.

But, for more 'advanced' users all it does is eat up system resources and slow your computer down! Here, I'll list a few reasons why you DON'T need ANY security;

  • If you still use Internet Explorer, switch to Mozilla Firefox or Opera. Both browsers aren't as commonly used as Internet Explorer and have better security features.
  • Don't visit 'dodgy' websites. And no, I don't just mean porn. Lyric websites, cracked or hacked websites etc. And if you do use them, make sure you use a private browser such as this - which don't mean leave any traces on your system.
  • Keep Windows (or whichever other operating system you use) regularly updated. To install updates in Windows XP, go to Start > Windows Update > Express. Also, keep all of your software updated, you can usually check if updates are available by clicking 'Check for updates'. However, if the program doesn't have this feature, use UpdateStar.
  • Don't p*ss people off. By this, I mean, don't be abusive to other people via forums, instant messenger or social networking sites - this is a fairly common cause for getting viruses!
  • Block tracking cookies. A long list of tracking cookies can be found here. To do this in Firefox, go to Tools > Options... > Privacy > Exceptions and enter the domain and press Block. If you want a further list of tracking cookies, send me a PM.
  • Install NoScript. NoScript blocks webscripts from running on your computer. For legitimate sites, you can allow scripts by clicking 'Allow *site name here*.'
  • Don't open e-mails from addresses you don't recognize. And, if you receive an e-mail containing a link you DO recognize, it's still best to type the address in your browser.

Hope this helps! :)

You don't really understand internet security very much do you.

Yeah your right with switching browsers but, mozilla is a bad choice you switch browsers you want to use Opera as it has a much less exploit count. You will find that most hackers will target your browser.

But hackers will easily get around a windows environment, the OS is VERY buggy. they can find a exploit open something up and upload a file if this file is trying to access the web you may find that your firewall will catch it in action.

You may find that they try to put in some malware which your virus can then pick out.

You should never use a PC without security unless you have seriously stripped out the OS or your running something like deepfreeze which can also be hacked but its rarely targeted it may mostly be hit by users wanting to do DDoS attacks.

Didn't say I did.

I haven't had security installed for nearly a year - I do the occasional scan, and it NEVER finds anything, so it works for me but w/e.

Another good thing to do is to use an account that can't access the registry. :)

Anyone can access registry using a third party application.

Viruses are detected by a virtual signature, therefore your AV is checking the database every few weeks or so to check if they found any new viruses.

The amount of viruses out are into the millions, no AV has every one of them logged I wouldn't be suprised if they only have 1% of viruses on the internet.

I have actually tried not running no protection before around a year I tried this out I just used it for regular use checking their wasn't any really nasty activities going on and I ended up with a count of over 100.

That was running 98SE.

Luca000, are you seriously telling the people who look at this forum that you do not use a firewall of any description, do not use anti-virus software and do not use anti-malware software? And that you have never had any infection on your machine as a result? Or presumably you only use them for checking, not for protection.

The original poster's advice was good advice in the years leading up to 2000.

Today, switch on an unprotected computer with a broadband Internet connection, and just let it sit for an hour. I am sure that by then the system had become infected with multiple malwares.

Every system that is connected to other computers via Internet, LAN, or other networks, needs an active firewall. Otherwise any infected system can spread the infection via direct connection. There is no user intervention required. Hacker (bots) are clever enough to find your Administrator password, and then your limited user account has zero protection.

We may go without anti-virus and anti-spyware, but a firewall - even if it's only the Windows one-way firewall - is required.

  • 4 months later...

This thread is the biggest load of tripe that I have ever seen on the forum. Those who followed my recent thread on FUNNY MESSAGES on the forum will know what I mean. I had just installed Windows on a completely new drive, and installed all my programs. I had NOT visited any dodgy sites, but had somehow had several lots of Malware downloaded onto the computer. Anyone who follows this advice is as daft as the person who posted it.

Luca000 only really contributed to two threads, one where he reveals he doesn't know how to add the drivers to his AGP and within a couple of months this one where he miraculously acquires computer guru status and shares this gem with the world.

He closed with

I haven't had security installed for nearly a year - I do the occasional scan, and it NEVER finds anything, so it works for me
But as he'd just had to reformat and hasn't been heard from since, so all I can say is choose those whose advice you decide to heed with care, Nellie2 he ain't.
