Anomalous member Data

A post today by Boris got me wondering about the accuracy of the membership list and the data shown about members in their posts.

For example

in the membership list Boris is shown as the sixth member to join - but on his posts it shows 16

Doug's stats are 29 versus 64

andsome is 38 versus 77

Mine are 92 versus 184.

In each case the difference is double or more.

I appreciate this is hardly earth shattering - but I would welcome a simple explanation.

Something to do with a large number of inactive members being deleted, and those numbers are not re-used...?

If you look through the members list there are numerous members still there who haven't posted for years - some still shown as mods.

It's all very confusing.

I seem to remember back in those far distant times, this anomaly reared it's head after a database glitch, cannot remeber exactly what happened, but i recall a number of members found their join date had changed.

I do remember I was 5th member to join in the 1st WF and somehow remained 5th member after the 1st crash, but memory becomes hazy with time

edit just been looking back through join dates, Craig, Madboy, Boris et al join dates 24-December 02, then there was the database glitch and my join date became 17-September 03 and several others had a similar happening

You have only reinforced my point. How can you possibly be member No 5 on the assumption that your joining date is correct.

I was most upset i can tell you :lol:

I do think any data after that date can be relied upon (as much as you can rely on anything on the internet)

The changed dates only affected those who posted in the short period after the glitch and before it was fixed. I hadn't posted in this period, so retained my original Member No - 16 :)

I've got an anonymous member - is that close enough.

Thinks before pressing the "add reply" button - "have I worded this in such a way as catgate's sense of humour can profit from it - No - seems plain enough and an unlikely candidate for pun time". Presses "Add reply" button very tentatively.
