AlanHo
I am fascinated by the press coverage of this incident - especially the Sunday papers in-depth stories by the flight and cabin crew. They seem to have left little out - just the inside leg measurement of the captain.I worry that BA were premature at shoving their staff into a press conference and allowing their families to sell their stories. No-one yet knows the cause of the crash and history tells us that speculation is dangerous. Whilst recognising that the crew did a super job - to laud them as heros is in my opinion a bit over the top at this stage. The factual info so far released is that the plane was making a normal approach until it reached 600 feet when it lost altitude and the engines did not respond. They have made no mention whether the gear and flaps were down, the engines had been activated to spool up at the correct altitude and the aircraft was previously on its proper flight path. There is a lot of information yet to come out and plenty of scope for mistakes to be revealed - let's hope not - but BA could well find itself with a lot of egg on it's PR face in the fullness of time.It has happened before and I bet Max Clifford will be watching events with a keen eye. Gandalph
At 600 feet, the gear would have been down!
rong
Did hear that they kept it up to lessen the drag
AlanHo
At 600 feet, the gear would have been down! The gear should have been down - and the engines spooled up from idle - at 1000 feet. It takes about 8 seconds for the engine to spool from idle so before it reached 600 feet the flight crew should have had an indication of lack of power. If, for any reason they lowered the gear at a lower altitude and spooled the engines then - there is a possibility the engines would have not had enough time to generate thrust. This is just one of many scenarios that the investigators will study. My point is that it was premature for BA to expose the crew to the media and for the media to print all the speculative rubbish.
Gandalph
I agree with you about exposing the Crew to the press. Yes it was a bit premature, unless of course they new something which we didn't, which is more than likely to be the case. The crew would have already been debriefed by there bosses before being allowed to speak to anyone about the incident.I know speculation can be a bad thing but I do remember a couple of years ago that the BAA had expressed doubts about these long haul flights coming into Heathrow from the Far East with so little fuel left on board. Could this have been one of these scenarios where the aircraft had run out and lost it's engines just before touch down? No doubt we will find out in the not so distant future. Pure speculation, but not impossible.

expertec
Eh well, major crashes aren't that common, and now we've had one, so I should be safe flying next week...
