This is saying something!

I've had a try with Vista Home Premium on my son's lappy. I played around with it for about two hours and I have to say I think it is a step backwards from XP, my opinion of course, but for what they are charging for a disc of plastic with this thing on is terrible. Even at half price it would be a rip off, I think it's a terrible OS. Definitely not for me in it's current form. My son ended up taking out the hard drive and replacing it with a new one and put XP onto it. He didn't like it either, and he had tried it for three weeks.

I installed Vista on a couple of new builds for my son's business. I had a quick play around with it and it didn't do anything special as far as I was concerned, certainly nothing to inspire me to change.

He told me this afternoon that he's replaced the hard drive in one Vista machine and installed XP. He's keeping the other machine (although not using it regularly) just so that he can say to clients that they have the latest computer technology.

I just couldn't get to grips with it pops, the Start>Programs was my first put off, followed by the whole lay out of the set up. I kept telling myself that it was because I was too used to XP and it's layout, then I thought about when I changed from 98SE over to XP, how easy it was. After another hour or so I had convinced myself that I didn't like it and as far as I was concerned that was that.

After reading all the negative reviews on VISTA would be wary of having it as an OS myself. Having said that, and knowing that my computer runs Win XP I believe that most of the problems are from folks trying to upgrade and running VISTA on a computer not capable of running it.

My sons laptop is running VISTA. He loves it. I don't know about this run-program thing as I helped him set up shortcuts on his desktop for his most used programs.

Don't get me wrong, I am not defending the OS as I do believe it is bloated and has problems...........which will eventually be corrected with SP's, as WinXP was.

BTW: Mike...........funny link!!!!!

This is quite serious for Microsoft as people don't seem to be upgrading to Vista in the numbers that they would have liked.

Personally, the one feature I was looking forward to was WinFS which was postponed and dropped from Vista.

It will probably be included in Microsoft's next O/S release though.

p.s. I have to agree with the majority of comments in this thread, I tried out Vista BETA in 2006 and (although it ran fine on this 7 year old PC) it didn't offer any 'must have' features that made me think "I must buy Vista when it's released" !

I'm still using XP but I will be buying it soon as I'm going to buy a new PC in a few months time and I don't see the point in putting XP on it

I've used vista a few times, and I'm used to OS's changing due to the fact I switch between a lot of linux distro's but I didn't get on with it.

You really do need a modern machine to run it, and I don't think I've tried it on very good machines except for one time and i still didn't like it but it was only a couple of hours test run.

I've never really been a fan of any windows menu's, from 98 to xp switch it was awful at the start even now I still use the old style menu :D.

But I have to say I like linux a lot, but I also like xp a lot due to its software support :D.

I've had a couple of friends saying its not bad but the compatibility issues are very annoying and would be a main reason to switch back to xp.
