The Post Office has announced the first 180 branches chosen for closure under plans to shut 2,500 by the end of 2008.

Some 58 branches have been earmarked in Kent, 77 in the East Midlands and 45 in the East Yorkshire area.

Another 35 branches could be replaced by "outreach services", such as mobile offices or services in shops and pubs.

Are you affected........

Our village (to our West) has been without a post office since the mid 90's (before we arrived here). The next village (about 3 miles away to our East lost it's post office in March.

That leaves us with a drive of about seven miles to Pocklington. There is a bus route for part of the way, but there are only about four buses a day. When one gets to Pocklington post office the queue always stretches out into the street because they have closed all the local village post offices for miles around and there are still only three counter "windows" available in the Pocklington post office. Then of course there is the problem of where to park your car and the cost of fuel to add to the cost of the stamp.

Happily there is an alternative. That is another post office in a village about eight miles South. Parking there is just as big a problem and they have only one counter.

Good init?

Our local sub PO has closed (as have many others) and the main Post Office has been relocated to WH Smith's - upstairs!!

It may be in the centre of town, but there is no handy place to park for a brief time.

Bus stops are not very convenient.

Seems like, "get at the old folk again".

....and if you look into it you will discover that the exorbitant (even by government standards) year end bonus paid, to the head of the Post Office, is based on the number of branches that he has managed to close. The reasons for closing them are mainly spurious and are all part of the scheme dreamed up by "consultants" to save expense.

One of the reasons that many are no longer viable is due to this stupid government removing many of their functions, one after another. Pretty soon, all they will be allowed to do is sell stamps. They even tried to water down this facility by allowing us to print our own on line stamps.
