Vista vs XP- a FRIENDLY discussion

I have a high end, dual GPU notebook that came with Vista. It ran horribly when I got in last October, so I tracked down drivers and installed XP.

The machine immediately ran MUCH faster, and games that were unplayable in Vista worked great in XP.

After 8 months of running XP, I reinstalled (a CLEAN install this time, not the Toshiba restore) Vista with SP1. It now is much much better, although it is still very sluggish compared to XP.

After a few more months running Vista, I think I'm going to XP, but wanted to see what others think.

My Vista LIKES:

1. Photo Gallery-this is nice

2. Aero, although I turn it off since it hurts performance

My XP LIKES:

EVERYTHING runs faster, including simply re-sorting folders etc. Games run much faster (fps graphics intensive etc)

I'm not bashing Vista, I just don't think I personally will keep running it on this machine, since XP is faster, and I can live without the limited improvements I've discovered.

Just would like to hear from others who've given both an HONEST chance, not just spreading rumors and myths.

This has been discussed before but, in my experience of computer building for my son's business and others, there is still a big demand for XP in preference to Vista. I have built a few Vista machines but, from what I've seen of it during testing and setting up, there is nothing there which prompts me to dump my current XP machines and rush to build a Vista enabled computer.

Obviously, XP will be unavailable soon but, my son has bought a reserve stock of XP disks which should keep him going until at least the next incarnation of Windows.

I am happy with my Windows XP performance, but within next couple of years, Microsoft will discontinue support for XP OS and will promote Vista in its place. As per current hardware configuration (which we have), I will go with XP instead of Vista. In near future surely I'll think of Vista, with upgraded hardware for my system..

My Vista likes:

Its animation and shortcuts available under one window.

Its look... (awesome)

My XP likes:

Obviously its speed and elegant look.

User friendly distributed icons.

I want to make small comment on Vista is that it needs a lot much amount of memory to perform as per our expectation..

Vista does not work with my companies (ancient) POS system. Unfortunately we have no choice until our developer is able to program a compatible version. I have limited experience with Vista, but what I have found so far is it is very resource heavy. A computer that will run XP quite happily may not run Vista very well, if at all, depending on hardware.

No, I don't think Microsoft will discontinue XP before launching Windows 7. Most of the business world is actually sitting on XP until a more serious OS than Vista will come along. I, for one, will completely skip Vista, as I have skipped ME.

I have been involved in end-user support for years now and had to go through the pain of ME. Sometimes I wish I didn't but although it was very unstable it was still a stepping stone for me on how i progressed with troubleshooting issues. Sometimes being thrown to the wolves and working your way through it helps in the end. :)

I already know for sure that I will have go through Vista the same way. Of course, with there being better support for it than old school ME I have already been receiving multiple calls on simple issues that end-user have been doing with XP.

thanks guys, glad to hear some honest comments without bashing or unrealistic expectations. Sounds like my feelings are pretty common...Vista is pretty, but XP is faster

There is only one beef that I have with windows Vista that is that it's slow. Compare to XP on my very fast computer, it's much slower.

I have a fast processor too. AMD athlon fx-55 cpu and 2gb ram

This has been interesting. I was going to wait a while before getting a new PC because I am unsure about Vista. I was hoping that in a while it would settle down. Then there's the added expense of needing a new printer etc because the gadgets and probably the (old) modem won't be compatable with Vista.......

Maybe I should wait a while longer until the next operating system is out?

I was looking forward to having a new toy too..........ah well..........

If I were to get a new PC now, I would get one with XP on it. But since my current - albeit old - system is running well, I may as well wait for Windows 7, which will (probably) not be released before 2010.

I'm happy with my PC at the moment but it IS getting old. I have been toying with more memory v new comp for a while. The general view seems to be that XP is still the best.

Can I wait two years - that is the question.......... :D

I would Artist , just get the memory and wait ....I'm running both ... Ive got vista running on a quad core and its nowhere near as fast as my 2yr old Pentium 3.4 on XP , If your just getting a bit bored with the machine why not just change the scenery , if you use ie7... try avant ,firefox or opera , sometimes all it needs is a lick of paint to freshen things ....

You could always put together a cheap low end spec. box for a few olde englyshe quds and pop Ubuntu on it, just to try out. No need to worry about scanner, printer, monitor etc drivers they are all built in, as is most of what you will need.

It took management but a short time to master it when we changed over, and she is just basically a user, not a techie by any means.

Like I said, I still find Vista much slower than XP on my dual-gpu dual-cpu machine, but it is tolerable. It is pretty, but I do plan on going back to XP when I have time to trudge through the install (it IS easier to install Vista IMHO).

I use graphics programs, video editing, gaming etc, and while they run fine on Vista on my "fast" machine, they certain ran 20-25% faster under XP.

Thanks again for the opinions......I think Microsoft must still expect the average user to have a faster machine than they really do.
