Superslow shutdown

when i got my pc, it used to startup and shutdown in 10 seconds [each]

but when i startup my pc now, it takes much longer [which isnt a that big problem, i can live with that], but the shutdown is taking like 10000000x longer: almost 5 minutes before my computer shuts down

and when it is shutting down, it looks like it isnt even doing anything most of the time...: no harddisk loading sounds...

does anyone know what might be causing this?

or how to decrease the shutdown time?

btw: i have much programs installed on my pc, but i set windows to shutdown them after 3 seconds [no shit like: Task Not Responding] so that couldnt be the problem

please help me out here... :(

Some security software seems to take ages to disengage itself, prime example is PCTools anti spyware.

@Belatucadrus: well, the only security software i have is AVG Free and Comodo Firewall, and ive used them before, and they didnt slow down the pc shutdown before...

@andsome: i know, but the weird thing is that the shutdown time increased a lot since a few weeks, i dont know what caused it, but i dont like it... [btw: i didnt install any new program which is running fulltime]

i guess i could try out uninstalling the firewall and virusscanner, trying the shutting down, reinstalling and see if its all slow again...

I had an identical problem on my previous computer running XP. I tried various things including a deep malware scan, system restore back as far as possible etc - to no avail.

I then made sure my data was backed up, re-formatted and did a clean install of XP and all my programmes. Computer still slow.

Eventually fitted a new hard drive and the problem was solved. Are you sure that it is not a hardware or heat related problem......?

What firewall do you have - ZA 8, by any chance?

@AlanHo: well, it could be my harddisk, but i never had any problems with it, so that would be rather weird... i also use TuneUp Utilities' Hard Disk Doctor to check my harddisk for errors, and it actually never finds anything [maybe sometimes after a serious crash or something >> never get that]

could this error be related to the slow shutdown?

EDIT: no, it isnt. this error is caused by the TuneUp Utilities software >> source
