I think if you have a plug n play o/s me, xp & vista (not sure whether w98 was truly p'n'p) then the OS configured the hardware.

Some of the earlier linux weren't p'n'p so the BIos had to configure the hardware.

I don't believe there is a problem if you allow the bios to configure the hardware.

Thanks for that mark2. I shall alter the setting accordingly and see what happens. I wanted the PnP operational and so set it to Yes, whereupon I got some very quirky happenings.

One would think that with the British public's newly aquired experiences of dealing with "nearly English" in all our dealings with Bombay Telecom, we would be able to cope with such crap as the above without turning a hair. :rolleyes:

I am looking for straws, to clutch at.

I seem to remember a discours about RAM some time ago, on WF, and one suggestion that came up was that the total should be balanced evenly between the available slots. Another view was that if multiple blocks were used then it should balance, but it was perfectly adequate to use one block on its own. ie 1 x 512 gives the same performance as 2 x 256.

I can not find the posting, so what is the current thinking on this, please? I also seem to remember another suggestion (pops ?) that if a single stick was being used it should be in the slot nearest the CPU.

I think it was said (written) that two sticks was better, with one stick I don't think it matters as if I have had problems in the past with single sticks I would just put them in another slot, with pairs they are usually coloured in pairs and as long as you use the same colours it shouldn't make much difference. Also you could read the booklet or poster that came with the mother board ;)

I don't think it matters about using multiple sticks (obviously as long as they're equal. not 1 x 256MB / 2 x 256) but try putting it nearer the CPU so it can manage the proccesses quicker. It's like using the same USB port for your Data Bar each time you use it, it begins to "learn & know" the device.

If that's understandable. :)

The literature that came with the mother board is particularly mean with information, rong, (in addition to being a bit unengrish).

It's only contribution is "2 x 240-pin DIMM slots Supports Duel-Channel DDR2 800/667/533 Supports upo 4GB" . However it does say it in 7 different languages (boolean not being one of them.)

If it only has two slots then not much can go wrong, all the boards I have used have 4 and instructions as to how to use them, the last couple of boards have been colour coded 1 and 3, 2 and 4

Ah! You must be on to the posh stuff, I'm still sluming it. :)
