Dencandy Posted January 10, 2009 Report Share Posted January 10, 2009 I'd add either McAfee SiteAdvisor (HERE) or Web Of Trust (THERE) to help you decide which websites are trustworthy (some people have found McAfee SiteAdvisor annoying for various reasons).When installing any software go through the installation process carefully & remember to untick all the various add-ons (like unwanted toolbars, etc) that you do not want. Otherwise you'll find yourself with lots of extras that you didn't expect & don't need.Also I'd advise not installing these utilities all in one session. Install one at a time, then use your computer for a couple of hours, then install the next one, and so on. That way, if things start to go wrong it's much easier to find the program that caused the problem and you can simply uninstall it. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

It provides anti-malware protection, browser errors or unsafe files in your browsers, and monitors changes to your registry settings using another built-in program called TeaTimer. TeaTimer is an optional install with Spybot S&D though, and if you end up downloading WinPatrol, Scotty (The watch-dog for WinPatrol) will monitor the same stuff near enough anyway so just uncheck this option. Some of it might be too advanced and unnecessary but look at his browser advice (disabling Javascript) , Hosts file (very important and easy, be sure to include the addition he posted further down the thread), poorman's firewall (a good way to use Windows inbuilt TCP/IP protection and actually understanding what ports are all about) If this looks too complicated to you - just read parts 2,6,9 ,10 and 11the easiest way to block script in to use the firefox browser and install thisI highly recommend NOD32 as antivirus , it's not free Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Personally I tried it and got rid of it. You sound as though you are feeling your way a little at present. Why not leave things as they are, and try it if you wish in a few weeks time. It is an unfortunate fact that some FF fans adopt a superior than thou attitude. It is the same with operating systems. It is an unfortunate fact that several have expressed opinions which as good as say that anyone preferring Windows to Linux, or IE to FF or another alternative is not quite right in the head. I hope that Amy will not try to run before she walks. It would be much better to thoroughly learn the most used system thoroughly and then when she feels competent, to experiment if she wishes. It could well be a mistake for her to jump from the frying pan into the fire because someone more experienced but not as clever as they think, pushes her. It's easier to block Javascripts in Firefox (or Opera), Javascripts can compromise your system by simply visiting an infected site.2. just like other browsers, Firefox and Opera have vulnerabilities . But they get patched very quickly and efficiently. At the moment both Firefox3 and Opera9 have no unpatched vulnerability (data: secunia report here and here ) while fully patched IE6 and IE7 still have some vulnerability (secunia: IE7, IE6) This is not to say that you cannot be safe using IE, but it seems much harder. Of course when choosing a browser security is not the only issue. Opera is considered the safest browser , but I still prefer Firefox cause I like the addons. Hb_Kai Posted January 12, 2009 Report Share Posted January 12, 2009 Just ignore Andsome, he doesn't know what he's talking about. :P :lol:Chrome decides to find a way of using more RAM for each tab you use, and likes to treat it as a seperate running application from what I've found. I would recommend either FF because it's fast, secure, and there are stack loads of add-ons, features and more that you can add to it, but then I would also recommend Apple's Safari because it's faster than FF at rendering web pages. But what I would recommend you do above all this is take note of what Andsome said and keep to IE before changing everything around so you can get to know what's what first with all the other software you're going to be downloading, installing and using.
