A 75 Year Old Lady rings her local hospital and this conversation follows:

'Hello I'd like some information on a patient, Mrs Tiptree. She was admitted last week with chest pains and I just want to know if her condition has deteriorated, stabilised or improved?'

'Do you know which ward she is in?'

'Yes, ward P, room 2B'

'I'll just put you through to the nurse station.'

'Hello, ward P, how can I help?'

'I would just like some information on a patient, Mrs Tiptree, I was wondering if her condition had deteriorated, stabilised or improved?'

'I'll just check her notes. I'm pleased to say that Mrs Tiptree's conditioned has improved. She has regained her appetite, her temperature has steadied and after some routine checks tonight, she should be well enough to go home tomorrow.'

'Oh that's wonderful news, I'm so happy, thank you ever so much!'

'You seem very relieved, are you a close friend or relative?'

'No, I'm Mrs Tiptree in room 2b. Nobody tells you a bloody thing in here

It's too near the truth.

Management was on the 'phone to one of her friends this morning, and apparently this friend's aunt had been discharged from a local hospital about the middle of last week. Yesterday, after being at home only for a couple of days, her daughter went to see her and found she was back in bed at home with a new problem. She was now under severe attack from sickness and diarrhoea.

She, and the house, were in a dreadful state and so the daughter tried to get a doctor. The doctor "could not come", so she tried to get a district nurse, with the same sort of success. So she dialled 999 and got an ambulance to take her back to hospital.

The doctor that she saw at the A&E told the daughter that she could not be addmitted in the condition she was in, and she would have to home. Whereupon the daughter pointed out to him that what she was bringing in was exactly what they had sent her home with.

She is now apparently in a little side ward, which, to put it nicely, "stinks to high heaven".

Thank goodness we have a National Illness Service.
