Installing/Using BCD on a logical partition?

Hi

Wasn't able to install Vista x64 (SP1 or other) on my SATA hard-drive. So I asked on an IRC channel, they told me (had to go on a few to get a good answer) that if I wanted to install Vista on a logical partition, that I would need a primary+active partition that is either NTFS or FAT32.

So I tried that, and was able to install to the logical partition. :flowers:

Now that I have Vista installed and running perfectly, I would like to remove that primary partition. As you know, I don't have a primary partition to spare for Windows.

Can someone please tell me if it is possible to re-install or move the BCD to my logical Vista partition, and subsequently allow make it work, or alternatively to, once I've got Windows 7 up and running, install/move the BCD onto my Windows 7 partition?

Thanks in advance,

Panarchy

Why don't you keep asking on IRC channels?

Use the Windows channels. I know they have some but they're not as easy to find as Linux ones...

Or even better, ring them. You'll need to come up with a good enough excuse when telling them you're using an illegal copy of their operating system though.

Hi

I am not using an Illegal copy of any Microsoft Operating System.

In fact, in December 2007, I won a copy of Windows Vista Ultimate.

Really made my day (and month/year!).

So yeah.

When was the last time you were on IRC? There are many more Linux channels then there are Windows ones.

Maybe that hasn't always been the case, but it is now.

Perhaps you had better re-edit your post, this time to include an actual answer to my question. Huh!!! (Edited by -pops-)

Thanks in advance,

Panarchy, don't insult people who may be trying to help you. Hb Kai is trying to help so to make comments such as those I've highlighted in your post above only serve to introduce alienation.

Asking Windows sources about Windows problems seems to me the logical way of going about things.

I'll say this again, I can think of no-one who would want to install so many operating systems on one machine so you are probably unique in this and it is unfair of you to expect replies to a totally new problem (possibly the one you're asking here) to which there is, as yet, no answer.

I have stated previously what my way of doing a multi-system would be and you saying you want to be prepared for your clients having potential problems on similar systems is unreasonable. VERY few people have more than one O/S. Even fewer have more than two.

Having said all of that, my granddaughter is very keen on computing and we (she and me) have just built a machine with the "C" drive in a caddy so that she can swap operating systems around as she wants to. At the moment we have XP, W98SE, a Linux (can't remember which flavour) and Windows 7 on separate drives to change around as she wants.

Hmm... so you would help me with the boot files of the BCD and getting that to work, right?

Sounds pretty interesting. How many GB is the hard-drive in each caddy? What do you think of Windows 7?

Sounds like another way (simpler) then the method I'm using. Sound interesting, however it is not something I want to do. I'd be afraid of having caddies lying around, that they would drop or get squashed or something. Also, I do have a 1TB (brand new) hard-drive, so I might as well take full-advantage of it.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to boot to a logical partition running Vista SP1 x64?

Thanks in advance,

Panarchy

PS: Still interested if you could answer those questions -pops-

Hello

In case anyone was wondering, I was able to fix my issue.

After much deliberation and contradictory replies from various sources, I have finally decided to keep Windows Vista x64 installed on the Logical partition, and to delete the Primary Active partition holding the boot files. I then installed Windows 7 onto a new 100GB NTFS Primary Active partition. I repaired my Vista installation using the Vista BootCD, thus adding its entried to Windows 7s BCD. I will then install Windows Server 2008 onto a logical partition, and also added that to Windows 7s BCD, unless of course if it's added automatically.

I will then install the two Linux's (Ubuntu + another!), both onto logical partition. This will be followed by the installation of OpenSolaris and FreeBSD, both installed onto logical partitions.

The next step is the installation of Solaris onto the final Primary Partition.

This latest constructional updates of my project should be of interest to my fellow pioneers,

Panarchy

What's wrong with this forum?

Some people don't like others that try things out.

There is nothing wrong at all in trying things out, but some things become just plain stupid. Panicky has had plenty of good advice on this and other topics from some very experienced computer users, and frequently chosen either to ignore it or argue against it. At least one such topic was closed by moderators. These topics have appeared on many other forums, always with the same result, and to my knowledge at least one such topic was closed by moderators on another forum. How on earth does he expect to get advice on a subject that to the best of my knowledge no one else would contemplate doing? He has already been given very sound advice on this particular topic by a very experienced member. You probably don't remember the topic where he argued and argued against almost every bit of advice offered, and was told quite emphatically on more than one reply to RTFM. We were treated to a blow by blow account of every box that was opened, and numerous picture of such boxes and bundles of cables. The best thing about these topics is that they provide a good laugh.
