AlanHo Posted June 11, 2009 Report Share Posted June 11, 2009 The postman popped a card in with our normal post today stating that they had been unable to deliver an item because the correct postage had not been paid. It said I could collect it from the local post office for a fee of £1.08.This I did - the guy verified my identity with my driving licence, took the £1.08 from my sweaty mit and fetched the "parcel".It was a normal envelope containg a birthday greeting card for my wife. My flabber was gasted - it looked OK to me with a first class stamp - so I asked "why"The guy said it was above the size limit for a normal first class letter and should have been stamped as a "large" letter. A normal letter has a size limit of 240 x 165 x 5mm and this envelope measured 245 x 170 x 2mm - thus 5mm too big in two directions.The £1.08 consist of £0.08 in unpaid postage plus a £1.00 handling fee.I can't deny the envelope is just outside the prescribed limits - albeit by a small amount - but let it serve as a warning to all budding senders of greeting cards. Measure the envelope before posting - or your friend or relation may get an unwanted surprise. Even better - measure the envelope before buying the card and pay only the minimum postage. It was the time of my birthday and, lucky for me, the jobsworth employee retrieved the card before I had handed over the money.I refused to pay as I didn't think it worth the money. catgate Posted June 11, 2009 Report Share Posted June 11, 2009 Isn't it wonderful how all these things change from being a service to being a revenue provider.The Royal Mail started as a means of providing a unified affordable way of sending letters. All the municiple services such as water, gas, sewage, and eventually electricity were started as services for the well being of the community. Trams and buses were similar. Gandalph Posted June 11, 2009 Report Share Posted June 11, 2009 I ordered a new DSLR Camera through Amazon and paid £8.45 for Special Delivery 'Next Day' before 1pm. The package was posted at 13:30 hrs on the 28th May, I took delivery on 5th June. By my rough reckoning it should have been here on the 29th May. But I may have got my calculations mixed up.I knew it was no good asking the delivery postman where the hell it had been as he can only deliver it when he got it to deliver.I have sent a letter to the Area Head Office to ask them what happened to the 'Next Day' service that I had paid my £8.45 for. So much for the Royal Mail doing things right. :(I wish you well, kind sir.When managements father died last October, we were executors, and, since we live 75 miles away from his house, we arranged with Royal Mail to have all letters redirected, and pre-paid them lots of pounds for the service. They must know their system is crap because you have to pay 'up front'.We got three lots of redirected mail, and two of those lots were all junk. In the other lot was a letter addressed to late father Jack's next door neighbour.Our being heavily involved in the sale of his house was one of the reasons for having this redelivery con. put in place, but, as these things usually work out, we had to go galloping across there on three occasions to find urgent letters and documents from both estate agents and solicitors. Of course when we got there we always found a great heap of junkmail behind the door, and always something for next door.When I wrote to Royal Mail and explained that I wanted milage allowance for the 450 miles travel that their bum system had caused us to do, they pointed to the small print. Which in effect said "whilst we are going to charge you handsomely for this service, you may well not get it....in which case up yours". I have given up writing to anything less than the CEO or MD on these things.We had a hell of a struggle to get an itemised 'phone bill out of BT after father Jack died. Management had rung them and asked for one, and was promised one,about five times by various members of the sub continent division, but all we got were summaries. Eventually I wrote to the CEO and two days later got a call from his personal assistant full of apology and a promise of what we asked for by first class post. The deed has been done and has passed with regard to the actual parcel side of the matter. It's funny though, after paying £8.45 for Special next day delivery on the camera and it taking all that time to get to me made me think again. I ordered a camera case from Amazon on Thursday 11th June and decided just to pay the standard postage, £2.85 I think it was, for their 3 to 5 day shipping. I ordered late Thursday night about 22.30. I received an e-mail from them the following day informing me that the Camera Case had been despatched. It arrived Saturday morning 13 June at 10.30, which makes me wonder why the hell I bothered paying £8.45 for the special delivery for the Camera.
