Ringmaster Posted November 17, 2009 Report Share Posted November 17, 2009 Greetings, first time poster. I have a Sony desktop that is a few years old. Specs: Pentium 4, 2.66GHz, 512MB RAM which I increased to 1GIG. 80GIG hard drive. My C drive is just about full and I don't keep a lot of stuff on the computer. No music or videos. The C drive totals at 15 gig and the D drive totals at 60 gig. I don't know why the D drive has so much space since that has nothing or hardly anything on it. In trying to search the C drive to find out what is taking up all the space one of the things I noticed was in the 'windows' folder there are a bazillion text files with name like KB955839. When opening them they state the number then the word log at the top. There is quite a bit of text that I don't understand some of which read like an error report. My question is are these files important or can they be deleted? The computer is starting to get booted off line quite a bit and I'm wondering if the lack of space on the C drive can cause this. Hb_Kai Posted November 17, 2009 Report Share Posted November 17, 2009 It's probably a good idea to leave the WINDOWS folder alone at the best of times :)Do a little system cleaning what that Windows cleaner thingy... It's somewhere in the right-click on My Computer dialogue but I can't remember what it's called.Disk Cleaner? Anyway, it's something like that. By running that, it should remove a lot of files that aren't needed by either you nor the operating system.Another good one is cleaning your histories and other junk left behind by program installations, browsers, downloaded files, temporarily stored files and who-knows-what by trying out the C Cleaner program...and after that, try defragging your PC with the Windows Defrag software found in Start > All Programs > Admin/System Tools > ** or try a third-party defragger program like Defraggler, Auslogics Disk Defrag, or there is a large plethora of free defragmenter programs out there on the Wild Wild Web, try looking through this Google search and find other alternatives if you like.And by following these steps, the computer should be easier to use and not so clustered by the end of it. You should definitely look into expanding that. The less free space your drive has, the slower your computer will be.Another good free partition tool is gparted. It will also - if you decide to - help you to get rid of all the WindowsUpdate uninstallers in the Windows folder.JDiskReport is a tool that can help you to find where your disk space is used up. (You will need the Java RTE to run this tool.)P.S. talking of Java, make sure you don't have any old Java RTE versions installed. Prior to JRE 6u10 you needed to manually uninstall older versions; you may still have some of these on your system, taking up more space. All those text files I had asked about in a previous post are gone by the way. There is still only 800mb of free space on my 15gig C drive. Since we cannot see your HD, it is impossible to tell what is using it. Perhaps some very large mail files (.PST, .DBX)? Backup files? System Restore points? I tried a do over and it told me I already have it. I can't delete the first download which will not run using either add/remove or just deleting it from the c drive. What next? What next?Not quite sure what "it" told you...When you go to the Java site and attempt to download, but you already have the latest JRE installed, it will tell youVerifying Java VersionCongratulations!You have the recommended Java installed (Version 6 Update 17).Is that what you saw?
