Gandalph
It looks like they are about to catch up with those Per-to-Peer sharing pirates. A lot of innocent people could be getting roped into this though. Lawsuits.

Hb_Kai
Not many. People sometimes prefer risking going to quick and easy ways other than the educational, longer and harder yet more awarding and safer ways.

catgate
I am tempted to ask what it is that is being shared between the members of the upper house, but that might be construed as intolerance. So I won't.So, more seriously, what category do Youtube things come under?Much of what I watch on there is old 30s to 60s trad, swing and the like. I presume someone somewhere will have ensured that they have obtained the copy write to this stuff years and years ago, so how does this fit in with this file sharing business and loss of money? ( I fail to see how one can lose money that one has never had.The greed of the music industry is equalled only by the greed of politicians, and when they unite in common purpose it is a fearsome sight, particularly when aided and abetted by the equally greedy lawyers. It is amusing in a way because it is all about the protection of ephemera. Sod the robberies and thuggery, where people are getting actual loss,..lets go for the "potential" loss of income from "intelectual property".How can the Gallagers, the Sex Pistols, Rolling Stones, Rappers and their like come under this heading. Hb_Kai
Isn't all the Youtube criticism about Youtube openly giving the URL to the videos so that they can easily be downloaded? As well as music being shared that isn't supposed to be.

Gandalph
In the main its about people that use peer-to-peer illegal Video and Music track dowloads that are of the Copyright type. For instance.A new Film is released on DVD. That film is for sale at places like Virgin or some other DVD or Music CD sales place. A pirate gets hold of one and transfers it to his HDD, another person using peer-to-peer to his computer downloads the DVD or music CD. Later, someone connects to the machine that has just downloaded using peer-to-peer network copying and copies from that machine, and goes on and on and on, ad infinitum. The person/people that have created these DVD's or CD"s have copyright and lose thousands if not millions of pounds in sales because of the peer-to-peer pirating. It's all along those lines anyway.. I have looked at Wikipedia but the description is in an alien language - possibly Nerdian. With me having only half a brain - the explanation needs to be plain and simple. AlanHo
File Transfer Protocol. I know your intentions were good Gandalph - but I am still no wiser. Does it meean that there is a truly polite way of sharing your copyright files (using the correct social protocol). Or are there some servers on the internet you can send a file to that others can then download without the transaction being detected by PC Plod.It is a serious question by the way. Not that I want to make use of the process - but merely out of curiosity.

This way, things are more private. I'll send you a link in a PM which may give you a better idea of them.
catgate
So...after all that, what is it that makes it acceptable for someone to post something on Youtube, for all to see, when it is illegal to post it to, or allow it to be copied, by another person?
Hb_Kai
It isn't. Which is why they took Youtube to court to gain user details so they can take action against it.
Dencandy
I think YouTube willingly make a link unavailable if someone complains to them that a copyright has been infringed (a so-called "take down notice"). See also the details in this Wikipedia entry: YOUTUBE.I was amused a few weeks ago to read that a contemporary German composer had released a "composition" on CD that was totally silent. Yes, no sound whatsoever. He is now being sued by another contemporary composer (Stockhausen, I think) arguing that this was in breach of his copyright as he had already composed a work of complete silence and released it on CD. Isn't the world a strange place? I'm thinking of copyrighting the word "I" and employing a firm of solicitors to sue anyone else that refers to themselves as "I", or uses "I" in any text or digital media, etc.

Dencandy
Thank you Rong for representing me in this matter. Please send your bill by PM. Is 50% commmission acceptable to you, and do I make the cheque payable to "Rong and Rite, Solicitors"?
