Cedric has found out at a very early age that it was virtually impossible to feed a cat Kedgeree, through the wrong end, unless its head was securely held in a vice. It was a lesson he would remember one winter's afternoon as he cycled over the moors to try his luck at parsnip trapping.

There had been reports of a flock of wild parsnips roosting on the moors, and since they were fetching several pence per dozen he could see his way to untold riches.

Whilst he was gone his mother had a visit from the parson, or, as he preferred to be called, the vicar.

It was as he was having his second cup of tea that he mentioned the shortage of gas down at the vicarage and how they were having to rely on second-hand coal. This caused Cedric's mother to gulp her tea, and in so doing she almost swallowed the vicars teeth. He had hidden them in her tea cup when he came in, because, following on from a previous visit, where the man next door had sold his wimple at a Government surplice sale, he had always felt uneasy.

She apologised for soaking the vicar with the tea she had expelled and claimed she had just had a twinge of her problem with “austere poor horses” in her joints.

Meanwhile, in a small castle on the banks of the Rhine, two landowners were quarrelling about who owned which bits of land in the valley. One claimed to own a large quantity of land which stretched along both sides of the river. Where upon the other said , “...And is it your Rhine?”

The claimant ignored this thrust and said that he had just heard of an idiot who was trapping parsnips out on the moors and was encroaching on their lands.

Now nothing upsets a land owner more than encroaching. Cockroaching they are quite happy with, but this was another matter....

To tell more would spoil your joy of reading this ripping yarn, and learning of the fate of Granny Carruthers and her corduroy dog, of the comeuppance of Wally Thribster and his clockwork goat and of the final reward of Desdemona the one armed violinist in the Berlin Philharmonic.
