The rules are clear - MP's cannot hire property or rooms from spouses.

He didn't have a spouse cuz he's secretly gay but has a secret boy friend with whom he shares a house and makes a contribution to its costs.

Hence he is technically innocent but perhaps morally guilty. That is why he has paid back the rent he claimed.

It's about time the legal beagles in Westminster got their asses in gear and wrote some clear rules in proper English these stupid MP's cannot wriggle out of.

I have just been looking at the table published by the BBC listing all MP's asked to pay back expenses and the amounts.

The table does not include any issues being looked into by the Standards Commissioner or the police, so they are not included in the following analysis and may well distort the figures.

Conservatives - 114 MPs asked to return a total of £574,941. Average per MP = £5,043

Labour - 188 MPs asked to return a total of £511,166. Average per MP = £2,719

Lib Dem - 26 MPs asked to return a total of £103,583. Average per MP = £3,983 (I have added the latest scandal with David Laws)

In the last parliament there were 356 Lab, 198 Con and 62 Lib Dems.

Hence the percentages of each party on the fiddle were Con 57%, Lab 53% and Lib Dems 42%

It would therefore appear that the Cons were the most adept at milking the system, Lib Dems next and labour a poor third in terms of the average amounts. The Cons are also top of the league in terms of the percentage of MP's involved - but in this regard the Lib Dems are bottom of the league and should be demoted.

I think what you have to take into account is the life span of each of the parties.

The Socialist party is only a very young party in comparison to the other two, (goodness me, it is only an adolescent party) and therefore has had less historical experience of the use and misuse of political priviledge. I think if you factored this in, on a £/year for the lifetime of the party, the Socialist would come out clear leaders.

Well it looks like that's the first (that I know of)thing they have gone back on (didn't take them long) he resigned and wasn't sacked and is as far as I know still in the cons party, must be a record
