AlanHo
Headline on the BBC News website todayQuoteBarclays Bank pays $298m to settle criminal chargesBarclays voluntarily disclosed some of the violations, according to court documents Barclays Bank is to pay $298m (£190m) to settle criminal charges that it violated US sanctions in dealings with Cuba, Iran, Libya, Sudan and Burma. The bank was charged with breaching the International Emergency Economic Powers Act and the Trading with the Enemy Act in dealings between 1995 and 2006.The settlement was detailed in US court documents filed on Monday.According to the documents, Barclays voluntarily disclosed some of the transactions, and co-operated fully.Barclays has agreed to pay $149m to the US government and a separate $149m in a deferred prosecution agreement with the district attorney in New York.UnquoteCan someone please explain why it is a criminal offence for a British/International company to ignore sanctions applied unilaterally by the US government. So far as I am aware - it was not a UN ruling - but just a USA one.It would appear that the USA consider that they are the Worlds rulers and whatever they decide has to be complied with by everybody. It seems to me that the UK should adopt the same policy - issue sanctions against another country - Israel would be a good start because it is a big trading partner with the USA - then sue anyone and everyone for breaking our sanctions. Done properly we could make billions and thus stave off our credit crunch cut-backs.

bludgard
What does the USA have on the UK?Usually people play along with a game because they are part of it in some way.Or there is some type of extortion going on.I trust none of them. They lie, cheat, steal, rape, pillage, plunder, murder at will. The USA is Imperialistic, yet a lot of this country's mores are rooted in European culture.I dare to say it;"The apple doesn't fall far from the tree."Somebody is getting paid, but it ain't me....I've begrudged bullies all my life.I mean that. But what's to be done?May God bless and have mercy on us all. andsome
The same one sided attitude applies to the gulf oil spill. How much oil have US companies spilled in Nigeria? What about Bopal and all the poor people there who will never get compensation?
