I need to convert some AVI files to a different format to play on DVD/CD player. It's an older player and I believe it to be MP2 format? It only plays the one format.

I have tried VLC and one other(?) and found it to be a resource hog.I like the way Windows products run on my OS,but...$So if there are any converters that you guys might be able to suggest it would be greaty appreciated.

When I first saw this I wondered if it was for real. There is more spam sent to forums on this subject than anything else.

First of all, be very careful about pedigree of anything that is suggested. It's a very good idea to have WOT installed to check the sites before you download anything via a Google search on this.

One program I've used in the past is http://www.dvdvideosoft.com/converter/video/avi-video-converter.htm but, I have no idea what it is like now as I've not used it for years.

You complain about VLC being a resource hog. Well, I think you'll find they're all like that. Converting from one video format to another is very intensive work.

My suggestion is that is you have found one that works for you, stick to it and just use it when there is not a lot else going on.

'Preciate it, -pops-.

I was just thinking earlier about the resource thing.Which led to thoughts of a faster CPU.Then more memory.Because my CPU is rated at 2.6GHz-however it over-volts(?) the DRAM freq just slightly, but it bothered me enough to stop fiddlin' around until I could afford to upgrade the hardware.

Thanks for the WOT.I'm on it.

I've looked around on google.Bing is the default browser. There is a lot out there.I did download iwisoft-I believe that was the other one I tried, but haven't opened it.Right now I have a decent download speed and want to take advantage of it. ;)

Fixin' to follow your link and see where it goes. B)

UPDATE:Downloaded DVDVideoSoft and ended up with some files.Problems with error:no disk recorders.Went to the forum for help but seems there's a major bug in the software. Most players/burners are not being recognized.Including WMP.

Maybe they'll get it worked out soon... :)

Can I use these files and burn them as UDF to disk or something?(Screenshot)

I'll try another.

These (The screenshot files VOB & IFO) are the type of files I end up with after I have ripped a "Personally Owned" DVD with **DVD Shrink** I dont rip the ones that I rent because that is illegal, whereas making one backup of a purchased DVD is not.

I have always thrown these particular files (VOB / IFO) at "Nero" and have managed to burn a DVD that is playable on a stand-alone DVD Player.

For converting AVI files, as was your primary question. I have always thrown these at "Nerovision Express" which does all the encoding and burning right from one program.

I've just fallen down badly on the "Free" part of your request I know. :(

Reading in-between the lines, what you would like to be able to do is convert AVI to another format which can then be burnt directly onto a DVD, which can be placed in a DVD player, and watched on T.V. right ?

If I had to go back and re-learn how to do those things using freeware now, I think I would have a hissy fit, and throw all of my toys out of the pram.

That's not to say it cant be done. - It can. - But I had so many component parts (Pieces of software) to do one job that in the end my head used to go around like a windmill. Things may have changed with what's on offer in the way of freeware now, - I dont know.

Back in the day I used these three sites to seek out both freeware and knowledge. I haven't been back to them in a while, have a dig around and see what you can find.

Try here ***Bike Exif*** It may bring you calm.

At the bottom of each page is "Previous Posts." You can go back quite a way.

Thanks for the replys ya'll.You've given me plenty to consider, and yes,MANEMAN,it is as you say-

"Reading in-between the lines, what you would like to be able to do is convert AVI to another format which can then be burnt directly onto a DVD, which can be placed in a DVD player, and watched on T.V. right ?".

I shall peruse the material submitted by all.I am grateful, and unlike some, will update with results.

The browser add-on WOT that -pops- suggested was implemented and appreciated.

To edit an earlier post,Bing is not my default browser, but my search engine-I guess you knew that though....

Seems that according to this guy,I'm going down the wrong path entirely.

You people are seriously in need of an update.

This is in response to the same question,"What converter should I use...".

............................. :rtfm:

Please try it and report back. And look sharp my lad - we are all agog.

It seems to me it will be a bit like converting a Christian to a Jew by changing his suffix..........

Okay. Now we've established exactly what you want to do, I think I've got what you need. - And yes it's free, comes with a small tutorial, and is fairly simple to use.

*** Free DVD Creator *** To save you searching around the webpage for the download link here it is:

**Direct Download Link**

I've just downloaded it, installed it, and tried it. - It works !!! :)

This website, like the one that pops suggested, also has other free stuff.

This software is very similar to "NeroVision Express to use" (It encodes the AVI, and has a burner incorporated)

When you install it leave the "Install FFD Show" ticked. As you go through the installation for FFD show you will be asked to select additional tasks. - Leave it just as it is.

When asked to set up the speakers ? - Tick the box which matches your setup.

The final screen you can leave all of the boxes unticked, - click finish, and you are ready to go.

If after encoding you should wish to view the video files they are stored by default on C: in a folder called "DVD Temp"

Dont worry that you cannot find audio files in the folder named "Audio". - That is normal.

Do remember to find out before you actually burn a disc, what discs your standalone DVD player will play. (DVD -) or (DVD +)

Many of the older players will not play "Re-Writeable" discs of either type.

When you are encoding or burning turn off screensaver, turn off other programs, Come off of the internet, Just let that one program have full rein with no interruptions. As pops has already said most of the video authoring and editing programs are CPU and RAM intensive. Even a small interruption like the screensaver coming on can cause blips and dropped frames in the video.

If you are wondering what FFDShow is all about you can find out here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ffdshow

Good luck Senor bludgard. :)

Much graces,my amiga!

I will try your suggestion in about an hour when this one is completed.

I am going to follow -pops-'s advice and try out a few different converters to ascertain the most appropriate to my needs.

I haven't tried Irene's pick yet-Any Video Converter.I've got a lot to try out.I am in need of that VM I have been talking about playing with. After every install, there is an equal and opposing uninstall.Followed by a Widows Explorer and registry souring of the uninstalled.

Thanks,MANEMAN,for your efforts.I have a feeling that not everyone would get this type of feedback. :flowers:

EDIT:I looked up the PDF for the DVD player. This is the format I'm going for...

It's not everyone who is gonna get eight of my family on their doorstep looking for free accomodation in the U.S. next year.

If you are doing constant installs/uninstalls use ** Revo Uninstaller (The Free Version) **

It uninstalls all the crap from the registry also.

Do so hope that you are not downloadin' them "porn clips" in "Flash", convertin' em to "AVI", and then stickin' em all on a DVD so's you can watch 'em on widescreen T.V. Jus' to spice life up a little bit ?

Cant stand that sort of stuff with people. Makes 'em go blind so I've heard.

Iffn' you wanna know how it's done I can show ya though. I've written a guide !

Keepin' my eye on you big fella, make sure you dont drift off the wrong way.

My bad.Had to re-image my HD.

Glad I keep updated on THAT. ;)

I guess that is sorta a VM in some regards?(Will it cause undue wear of my HDD if I use system imaging occasionally?).

Any way.I started getting info-links poppin' up in texts,my DVD/CD-ROM started hanging up,Internet Explorer crashed,Windows Explorer crashed.... :0

No MANEMAN,It wasn't from watchin' dirty pictures. ;) I'm not sure what caused it but the event viewer was filling up faster than I could keep up with it.I looked for an easy-out.

I did get a DVD out of the native application Windows DVD maker that played in my stand-alone player, but the audio/video was out of sync.Maybe it was because I formatted the AVI to MPG-2/MP3 specs before I burned it?I noticed that the settings of FPS was set to 29 in the converter. The original file was 25.There wasn't a way to change the converters frame-rate.

I'll try another....

I agree with Maneman about Revo Uninstaller - excellent facility.

I am sure that you will find 'Any Video Converter' a useful tool. HERE are some screen shots.

I'm downloading AVC now.

I will try this converter followed by Windows DVD Maker to see if product is in sync. From quite a few threads I have browsed dealing with Windows DVD Maker, just about all coverters have been out of sync when burned (including AVC) with no real solution.Maybe that is why the OEM install on this machine had a third party ripper?I shall try it for myself though. What burner/ripper do you use if you don't mind me asking?

 I kind of bumped your suggestion in favor of the one MANEMAN linked me to only because his had a burner with it.

My thanks again,Irene.

I shall look into the REVO matter as well.

Strange thing.

Free DVD Creator wouldn't work for some reason.I tried two installs.Setup went well.Yet when I added AVI and proceeded to next step, the program hung and grayed out indefinitely.Probably compatibility issues that could have been overcome, yet I wanted something that would run like the rest of my PC,smooth.

Revo Uninstaller works well by the way. ;) I have only used it the one time with Free DVD Creator, but I'm fixin to get rid of a couple of useless programs so I'll see how it goes.Thanks.

Any Video Converter works well.It gives me the options I needed to adjust frame rate,input/output,etc.I dropped converted video onto Windows DVD Maker and it created a disk readable on my standalone player. :)

"I like the way Windows products run on my OS,but...$".Remember that from my first post...?

To fiddle a little more I just dropped an AVI file onto Windows DVD Maker and lo and behold it played as well. :shok:

It appears that the native DVD burner applies encoding supported by the regional settings provided by setup of OS.It encodes regardless of the format given and burns the disk.Quite convenient, but takes all the fun outta fiddlin'.

:fool: I did do some research on this native burner and most of it was negative.Just goes to show that you'll never know until you try it for yourself.I apologize for bothering you for this when it was not necessary-yet i learned a lot about Audio/Video and who to better learn from than the "Crack Computer Expert Investigation Team" :friends:

Thanks to MANEMAN for the videos embedded within this thread.

I'll be making movies of my own to post soon. :rtfm:

'Precite it family.

:pardon:

Thank you for extra fiddlin' "power-ups",MANEMAN.

It never ends,does it?

Anyway, the Revo Uninstaller works well.I still find files/folders left behind searching with Windows Explorer. Also reg files with CCleaner.I will keep it though because I like the extra layer of cleaning for eliminating the banished.I'm sure the paid version of Revo is more thorough.Yet between The free Revo,WE and CCleaner,I feel comfortable enough not to fret myself sleepless over an unclean OS.

I love -pops-'s suggested search tool WOT!It takes the guessing out of whether a site is reliable or not.I'm sure it's not infallible, however if there is a chance that a site is not on the up-and-up when searching for an app or program that I am likely to keep for a while, there are plenty of other sites that are reliable.WOT is a keeper. Thanks -pops-. :D

Thans again for all efforts. :hi:

Whilst WOT is very useful, it isn't infallible as it relies on reports from users about potentially dodgy web sites. It does have a very large usership and reporting base but, they can always use more volunteers. Why not join? You don't have to do anything except report any sites you come across which might be less than safe.
