Mr Micawber is a creation of Charles Dickens in his novel David Copperfield:

One of his oft quoted phrases is "Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure nineteen pounds nineteen and six, result happiness. Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure twenty pounds ought and six, result misery." From whence comes The Micawber Principle.

The "Shades" part of my previous response is meant to indicate "Reminiscent of". Sorry if I was confusing.

I picked that up. ;)

Just thought I'd add more words to validate the thread topic.

I've read a little Dickens back in the day-yet this has thrown a new light on the matter. B)

Wow.This John Wilkes was quite the fellow....

On 10 May 1768, the imprisonment in King's Bench of radical John Wilkes (for writing an article for the The North Briton, that severely criticized King George III) prompted a riot - the Massacre of St George's Fields - in which five people were killed. Like the earlier buildings, this prison was also badly damaged in a fire started in the 1780 Gordon Riots.

Lively lookin' place...

EDIT TO PREVIOUS POST:I apologize for being so cryptic.I ran across this when reading about Mr. Micawber.Seems the character was modeled after Dickens' father and the father was incarcerated in this debtors prison.Which led to the John Wilkes refference....
