The password I use for this site would take 3 days for a PC to crack. It is a 6 digit mix of lower case letters and numbers.

The one I use for online banking would take 4 days. It is an 8 digit mix of lower case letters and numbers. By changing one of the letters to upper case the time to crack increases to 252 days.

I found this an interesting exercise and I have been experimenting with various possible passwords. It is clear that the inclusion of some capital letters makes quite a difference.

They're not getting any hint of my passwords (note the plural - it is folly to have just one password).

I would never trust a site that gave such a totally ludicrous figure for the chances of cracking a password.

I'm with you.

I can't remember some of my own passwords.And I certainly don't opt to let Windows remember or store any personal info.

Maybe I'm a little too paranoid,but....

Having now used the site to carry out experiments with different types of passwords - I have changed my most important ones to passwords that will be difficult to crack.

For sites like forums - I use the same password for all of them. However for banking, shopping, insurance and other such sites I now have a suite of individual passwords that are relatively easy for me to remember but hard to crack.

You could do what I did - substitute other letters and numbers for those in your password to check how safe the structure is.

I was surprised at how the inclusion of a capital letter made such a difference in security.

No. I duplicate the information together with lots of other information onto two memory sticks. All in carefully labelled folders. I believe in at least duplicating everything to do with the computer.B)
