I do that occasionally with Amateur Radio Repeater masts.I have to go up and check the Ariel's,sometimes replacing them, put new coax cable onto them and put shrink-wrap sleeving around the PL259 connectors.Building them is the worst job. You can be 80 to 100 meters up hanging by a single rope attached to a nylon safety harness with a helicopter above you with a five meter section dangling under it, then you have to manoeuvre it into place by giving the pilot directions through a headset then start bolting it into place. All this with the chopper giving off a 60 MPH down-draught. It takes day's to start from the bottom and finishing at the top. But I'm still here (I think). I don't have a fear of heights.Oh right.What 800 ft up a tower :0 I will say that most people would have a fear of heights especially when there is no safety harness ;)Well the way I do it is to hook the Carabiner above me at arm's length then climb up till it's just below waist hight then fasten a second one again at arm's length then take off the one bellow and so on and so on till I get to the top then I hook them both on. bludgard Posted October 2, 2010 Report Share Posted October 2, 2010 Being an ironworker of over 20 years,I will interject that 10 feet is no different that 1000 feet.It's not about how high you are,but more your level of confidence and competence.I have rarely tied off to the structures I have erected because it inhibits movement (duh!) and slows production.I have been ordered to tie off and have,but otherwise....Skywalkers know that your best defense against misplaced steps or handholds is to never disrespect the spirit of the iron by exibiting an air of carelessness or bravado.As it is,in the 20+ yrears I have never witnessed a serious or life threatening accident.I wouldn't have it on a site I'm working on.That being my 2 cent,there has never been a more rewarding and exciting job to compare....One Love Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
