Ready made mashed potato, roast potatoes, yorkshire puddings, and countless other basic foods are the consequence of the young of today not being able to cook.

They can buy toast and a tin of beans and create a culinary wonder. For pudding - a slice of bought cake with lashings of ready made custard.

Oooo yummy

We have on occasion used ready made mashed potato, though I'm not a huge fan as the texture is just wrong, proper mash has some variation in texture no matter how long you mash it. I think chefs that feel mashed spud should be a uniform homogenised paste are wrong and guilty of serving an inferior product.

We used to call it Pom, and it was bloody awful.

If I remember correctly POM was an off shoot of the wartime years. It had been developed for the  use of "Our Lads" at the front and it was available after the end of the war for those who wanted it. The scout troop that I was in consisted of about seven or eight of us but only three of us used to go camping, taking with us POM........good old days.

We are still in touch after all these years.
