Looks like a very sound thing to ignore,

Closest I got to that was the reversing lights on my first car, as it was an optional extra that had never been fitted after installing some lamp fittings in the appropriate slot I ended up wiring them to an illuminated switch on the dashboard, helped remind you to turn them off.

I did that on a truck once many years ago. VW didn't use to fit reversing light's on their 3.5 tonne Vans at the time.

"My first car " was a cast out little, green,  pre-war Morris telephone van.  I paid a man £5 for it  in the "lateish" 40s. I recovered £5 from him two days later, after I discovering that there was so little power in the engine that it was impossible to go up some local roads without an additional someone pushing the the van to help the engine (sometimes it necessitated the driver leaping out on the move and leaping back in again on the move. 

 

To be fair the vehicle was in the "Hilly" area not far South of  Howarth,  but gravity seems to be the same almost anywhere.

The car was a VW,  a red type three fastback in many ways ideal for a student had decent boots front and back. On the trips home from polytech it was amazing the amount of crap I managed to get in it. The consequence however was utterly appalling engine access as it was under a panel in the back boot and getting at the spark plugs was a complete swine. It also rusted like crazy.

Sounds like it was the VW K70 (I think that was it's name) if the engine was accesable through a hatch in the floor. A mate of mine had one of those and he was constantly having to replace the heater belt on the engine blower.

That's the one Belatucadrus, I remember it now. The local back-street garage owners son had one in Penshaw when I had just left school. As I recall he loved it but his father, the Garage Owner thought it looked like rubbish. Such is life I suppose.
