doug Posted February 3, 2004 Report Share Posted February 3, 2004 I've got an application that's gone a bit dodgy. Was thinking about uninstalling it and the re-installing it. It has been suggested that I clean the registry before the re-installation. Now I've never been down into these depths before. Suggestions please and advise on any software to do this. My record was 1257 redundant entries it found on an old Win98 Evesham which had been subject to all sorts of mistreatment over 5 years of use.I'm not sure if its still available any more though as freeware ? andsome Posted February 4, 2004 Report Share Posted February 4, 2004 If you tinker with it by hand which I have done on several occasions, export it first, so that if you bugger things up you can re-merge it.Start/Run. Type regedit then OK. File/Export, give it a name, eg Registry and save to desktop, or elsewhere if you wish. After tinkering, leave it there for a couple of weeks in case you have caused problems. -pops- Posted February 4, 2004 Report Share Posted February 4, 2004 Better to re-install from a full backup than any of these new fangled system restore efforts.System Restore in XP doesn't completely restore your system to what it was at the time the restore point was made - this is illustrated by the very fact that you don't lose data and files that have been added since the restore point was made.At the risk of being terminally boring, whenever I install ANY software (or hardware) I make a full system backup to enable me to return to my computer exactly as it was before I made the changes. This has helped me a number of times in recovering from unsuitable and unwise downloads and installations, including some Microsoft "critical updates" which turned out to be less than suitable. Stick your windows disk in the drive and go to start, run and type sfc /scannowNote the space between the c and / This will check for and replace corrupted system files. It didn't report anything so I presume the critical files are OK.
