  1. Hi, everyone, Here's a biggie for you. :-) One of my clients is still fully dependent on legacy software that was custom made for them in 1993. (Don't ask. Please. Don't ask.) On the server side this means Novell Netware 4 and Btrieve, on the client side we're looking at either DOS and the Novell ODI stack (network interface driver, IPX protocol and Netware client requester) or Windows XP, the Netware client for XP and a DOSbox. Yes, I know. Ugh. But it's a long story and the reality is I have to suck it up and deal with it. They're at a point where this dinosaur simply cannot be upgraded, and scrapping it in favour of something belonging in this century requires either budget they don't have, or restructuring their workflow which they don't want. Their entire corporate culture has essentially calcified around this piece of crockery for the past 20 years and they want it that way. However. With XP being seriously end-of-life and Windows-8 being standard on all new PCs, I somehow do need to bend over backwards and make this work on W8 one way or another. Which is where virtualization comes in. I understand that Client Hyper-V does not support DOS natively. On Linux I used Oracle VirtualBox, but I have read mixed reports about using that on W8 (it seems to seriously clash with W8's own virtualization to the point where installing VB might break W8 and necessitates a system restore). I have little experience with W8 and none with Client Hyper-V. I realize it was not made to support the abomination above. But somehow I need to let a DOS app run on W8 and let it talk Btrieve to a Netware 4 server using the IPX protocol. In 2014. What are my options? Any suggestion would be a godsend. Thank you! // FvW
  2. So, I recently got a new computer from Dell and it was a Windows 7 (64 bit) computer. I purchased it to replace a computer we already have running, but there is one application that just isn't compatible. The program is called Power-Link. It's a DOS program that reads log files and generates reports based on the files. It's a pretty simple program. It's a program that was designed for the radio industry which means there isn't really a market to shop for alternatives. We've been stuck with it. Anyways, the problem I've been having is that Windows has officially taken the stance that the Windows 7 (64 Bit) operating system will never support DOS programs. So I've been experimenting with DOS emulators such as DOSBox to try and get the program to run, but DOSBox seems to have an issue with it. That's a whole other Forum post. So I'm wondering what I can do to get this program to work. Is there any way that someone has found to get DOS running on Windows 7 (64 Bit)? Other Ideas I've Been Thinking Of - Does Windows 7 provide a way to somehow reduce Windows 7 (64 Bit) to Windows 7 (32 Bit) so that it would support DOS? - Is there an emulator that's better then DOS Box for logging programs? - Also, why was DOS removed in the 64 Bit version?
  3. I have a rather strange situation on my hands. You see, here at my new workplace, we have a certain industrial machine which requires several programs and drivers which, in turn, only run on Windows 95. In addition, the installation CDs for said programs and drivers have evidently been missing for the last ten years. Up until now, we have been using a Compaq Prolinea 4/66 which is probably older than I am, but it's on its last legs and so it has fallen to the resident assistant IT tech (me) to come up with a solution that doesn't cost the company any money. Now, I happen to have an old HP dc7600 lying around with Windows XP SP3 Pro. At first, it was my plan to run a virtual machine (via VMware) with the Win95 image. Unfortunately, VMware requires more than 1GB of RAM which is all I have on hand. If worse comes to worst, I'll pay out of my own pocket for more memory, but I'd rather avoid that unless it's absolutely necessary. My next best bet seems to be to try and create a bootable USB flash drive with the existing Win95 installation on it. I have found various tutorials for running a bootable DOS prompt which can then be used to initialize a fresh version of Win95, but I can't seem to locate a way by which an existing installation could be utilized. Any suggestions, either for a flash drive trick or some other method? It doesn't need to be fast, and it doesn't need to be pretty, it just needs to work. I am unsure what system specs one would need to know for this particular issue, but the dc7600 I'm working with has Windows XP SP3 Professional v.2002, 1 GB of memory, an 80 GB HDD, and an Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.20 GHz. If you need any further information, do not hesitate to ask. Many thanks.
  4. I usually do my beginner Java Console Practice using Command Prompt as the compiler. But there is a problem, my Command Prompt can't read ASCII. It's because there is no Lucida Console font in the Command Prompt. Previously I had installed Japanese Language bar to my Laptop, but it makes strange symbol in my Words, so I decided to uninstall it. But the Japanese fonts doesn't get removed. The " \ " symbol still changed into yen symbol. When I try to make ASCII with Java it didn't show up in Console. all becames " ????? " symbol. When I check the font, there's only 'raster font' and some japanese font. When I try to add Lucida Console from the Regedit, it can't be added. Please, help me with this problem. Thanks
