That sort of lingo on a phone text to phone text or computer SMS to phone basis is OK, but when a full keyboard is at your disposal there's no need for it. I received the reply in some strange mix of "words" without any vowels and hieroglyphics which I didn't understand. I gave up. I have better things to do than try typing alpha characters into a basically numberic keyboard where each key has three or more functions. Whatever happened to speaking to each other??? I remember a train journey where a girl sitting opposite spent almost an hour tapping into one of these cursed machines - a beep at every stroke. At the end she got up, went to the end of the carriage and gave some poor youth an almighty slap across his face. It was her boyfriend and they'd been having a techno argument. andsome Posted May 14, 2004 Report Share Posted May 14, 2004 People using text speak when they have a keyboard at their disposal and are on a forum like this, are not only being rude to other members, they are also showing a large degree of ignorance. Even when attempting to speak reasonable English, which doesn't happen very often, some members cannot spell correctly, and are incapable of using a spell checker. Sure, everyone can make mistakes, but the lack of education shown by some members, makes me wonder just how much of my tax money is going to the schools. The forum is not here to teach English, I understand that, but some people seem to think that they display a great degree of intelligence, by publishing rubbish that only a minority are likely to understand. Using "text language" is not being rude to other members at all it is just something some people do. I can't see how it can be any more 'rude' than using regional dialects when speaking to someone from another area.I can touch type, but can't spell which means there are a few words that I've learnt the wrong finger patterns for and so will always spell wrong. On a mobile phone I can well understand that it can be tiresome to insert every single letter, and shortened forms, providing the recipient can understand are of course no problem. No definition of that has been given.English as a language has constantly been evolving - look back over the years and you can see the shifts that have occurd. No longer are words like "verily", "thee", "thy" and no doubt countless others in everyday use.I see no problem in speaking any lanugage in everyday life, but if you want to communicate a message then you need to do so in a way the receipent will understand. The reason behind concepts such as l33t is that the users didn't want everyone to understand it.You claim that good looks brings extreme intelligence - if there is any truth in that, then the use of "text language" should not present a problem for you - infact I think GCHQ are looking for more code breakers.Again I would encourage those who actually have an interest in the English language and its development with the Internet read "ABC to Email by J. Barron" or "Language and the Internet by David Crystal". Both give a very interesting and thought provoking perspective on the subject.How long before someone demands the full use of gramatical punctuation in all posts and forbid the use of emmotional punctuation?!?!?!!?!?!?!??!
