I know we are talking only football here, but, it has always puzzled me why international sport, of all kinds (footy, cricket, athletics etc) is tolerated by our 'politically correct' government and all the army of vegan, lesbian, one parent, green, ethnic minority, CND, childless families who are so against "Racism". The whole purpose of international sport is to Prove who is top dog. Governments pour millions of pound/dollars/deutchmarks/lira etc into this. Personally it matters not one jot to me because I know which is the best nation, but I think the tax money spent on SPORT could be better spent.

I agree that TOO much money is spent on sport. Why on earth people stand for the ridiculous charge to get into football matches is beyond me. However, sport is great in it's own right. I never was much good at football and cricket but at last I have found something in which I can turn in a decent performance, namely crown green bowls. I love to watch local football matches in the parks and playing fields. I just cannot understand however, how the world got round to paying sports participants such ludicrous amounts of money. £50,000 or more a week plus sponsorships for people of doubtful intelligence to kick a ball around is absolutely ridiculous.

Let's have some names then.

Scruffy looking git Beckham comes straight to mind. There's others who don't immediately spring to mind as I am no longer the fan that I was when the game was played because the players enjoyed it, and made a few bob doing it.

The whole point of any competitive sport is to prove who's top dog. That is the meaing of the word.

It isn't restricted to sport. There are so many competitive things in life - the whole of society is formed around competition and the whole of society would collapse without it.

Competition is sublimated aggression - war if you like without (usually) the casualties.

-pops-

and the whole of society would collapse without it.

That's a very interesting observation. Would -pops- perhaps expand a bit, please, on the thinking behind it. I know that most of the worlds competition is greed driven and it would be a damn good thing if we could get rid of greed. Still more competion is instilled in schools for erronious reasons, but I am not sure I quite follow the collapse of society thing.

Competition occurs throughout life - any life.

Darwin termed it "survival of the fittest".

"Top of the dung heap", "king of the castle", "alpha male" and all of these precepts is fundamental to the continued existence of the living being, plant or animal.

In the human animal the social being has stylised the need for survival, for the most part, by introducing formalised contests - ceremonies if you like - where the superiority of one against another ("one" being an individual person, a town, a county, a country, whatever) is demonstrated by the prowess of being able to hit a ball into a previously defined area or some other often pointless skill. In other words, sublimation of the survival urge.

It is unfortunate, perhaps, that some members of society are unable to grasp the idea behind these ceremonials and they exhibit the crude attitudes of lesser beings and go against societal norms and attempt to show some sort of survival instinct by wayward methods such as extreme violence.

There is a whole treatise worth of ideas in this and it is becoming very off topic and potentially boring to most members that I don't think that this is the place to expound them.
