Book recommendations needed

For many months I have been caring for a terminally ill wife who needs to have her mind taken off the situation. So do I for that matter.

Over the past 3 weeks she has read the series of Tom Sharpe humorous novels - Wilt, Blot on the Landscape etc. and really enjoyed them, even though it's painful to laugh.

Does anyone have recommendations for other Authors books that are really belly laugh funny ?

The Henry Root Letters ISBN 0 7088 1888 9

The Further Letters of H. R. ISBN 0 7088 2106 5

Virtually anything by Spike Milligan, especially Pukoon

Gamesmanship, Lifemanship, and Oneupmanship all three by Stephen Potter

and of course the forthcoming election promises!

I hope Mrs Ho has swift and easy transition.

My time in intensive care and in the recovery afterwards was very rewardingly spent reading some good old Agatha Christie books, especially Miss Marple and Poirot.

OK, they're old fashioned and overexposed on TV but they are written in a very absorbing way which makes you forget about things going on around you.

Harry potter.  I know everyone laughs about them but if you have spare time they are worth the read.  good luck alan

We have read these as and when they were published - I would categorise them as amusing rather than uproariously funny.

It is belly laugh funny that I seek.

Just read a book called "The Frights" by Nicholas Salaman which was claimed to be funnier than Tom Sharpe by all the reviews on the back cover. It hardly raised a titter in me - let alone a good laugh.

Terry Pratchett, the disc world series, excellent.

Look here Books and writings

Only one creature could have duplicated the expressions on their faces, and that would be a pigeon who has heard not only that Lord Nelson has got down off his column but has also been seen buying a 12-bore repeater and a box of cartridges.

and

"I'm not going to ride on a magic carpet!" he hissed. "I'm afraid of grounds." "You mean heights," said Conina. "And stop being silly." "I know what I mean! It's the grounds that kill you!"

A couple of random quotes from his books

Very very sorry to hear about your wife Alan. She is welcome to borrow the hitchhiker books by Douglas Adams if she wants. I have all four stories in one volume. It is called 'A trilogy in four parts'. If interested send me your address.

Racked by brains for a funny one per se.

What I came up with was Bernard Knight's Crowner John Mysteries, Tales of the the first Coroner in Devon in the 12th century, the humour comes in , in the interplay with his brother-in-law the Sheriff of Exeter, and between John and his wife.

The other author is M.J.Trow.

He first wrote about Sholto Lestrade the policeman in Sherlock Holmes stories but later transferred to writing about a teacher in a modern comprehensive school. who just can't help getting mixed up in murders. The teacher is called 'Mad Max' by pupils and other members of staff. Great Reads.

Thanks for the info it is truly appreciated.

Thanks also for the offer andsome - unfortunately we have read the Hitchhikers books so our search goes on.

I spent an hour or two in the public library today having a browse. I was amazed at what they categorise as "Humourous". Perhaps it's my peculiar sense of humour.

I can remember when in my early twenties, travelling back and forth to work by bus on the upper deck - reading a book through the cloud of cigarette smoke. I stumbled on a particular author who wrote the most funny books I can ever recall reading - so much so - I used to embarrass myself by laughing out loud on the bus and getting all those "funny" looks from fellow passengers. It's a bugger - for the life of me I cannot recall the author or any of the titles.

The other thing I can remember from my bus travels is to look up the bus and see that almost every other bloke either had a boil on his neck or he had a stye on his eye. You don't see them now do you?
