Just got back from the last of my long runs before the event itself. 12.8 miles in 122 min 38 secs @ 9.6 min/mile. 1494 kcals shed over 21,116 strides. Had hope to be a bit quicker but knee was hinting at giving me some gyp so just settled down to a steady pace. A couple of rest days now then might do a few 6 mile shorties just for fun and light exercise. :D Training

I'm sorry to say that my right knee really has been playing me up. This was the one I knackered gardening a while back and got a mountain bike fo exercise. Well my body (temple to athleticism) has been giving me a message. I'm now wearing a knee support and have decided no more jogging until the great event Sunday week. To try and retain my lythe suppleness I'll be doing some trips on the bike. However I'll do that run even if I have to walk it! :D

To walk it at 3.5 mph would take about 3.75 hours. Interestingly when I did industrial administration as part of my degree we delved into time and motion studies ( don't tell the Union). The bench mark for a 100% work rate was 4 mph. Now have you ever tried walking at 4 mph, it's a very brisk walk. To keep that up for 8 hours a day is something else. No wonder the time and motion chappies used to have such a terrible time and the games the work force used to play whenever a T & M study was being carried out on a new job. I used to be an industrial chemist at Plessey, Ilford. We made TV's, car radios, telephones, army communications gear and clever stuff for the airforce and civilian planes.

Anyway have just checked the instructions and there is a sweep vehicle that travels at 17 mins/mile (3.5 mph). If it overtakes me I will be ruled out of the race. I'll have to get a rear view mirror to keep an eye open. :D

Doug, just do what you feel comfortable with. Those of us who have donated are I feel sure not interested in seeing you harm your joints. We have donated because it is a good cause, and as far as I am concerned there is NO obligation to finish the course. I would be very surprised if anyone else feels differently.

Thank you for your support. However I am going to get across that finishing line come what may. It's not just a question of letting all those people and the hospital down it's me and all the effort gone in to it this last year. Had hoped to knock 30 mins off my personal time. Well that was the ambition anyway.

Went out on the bike again this afternoon - 4.3 miles not too bad. In fact better than the 1 mile I did yesterday. Am wear a knee support which seemss to help. Will post a picture shortly taken by G'daughter of me about to set on the bike

Progress, I think. Chris - No. 1 son in law - was over a couple of hours ago bringing a tube of Ibuleve gel. This you rub on the joints and the included Ibuprofen diffuses through into the joint. Well in 2 hours there's been a great improvement.

Thanks for the kind thoughts. However, that Ibuleve gel is magic stuff. Did a 4 mile bike ride this afternoon accompanied with Anne on her Harley Davidson/Bath Chair. Bit windy but went OK. Not too much pain. Starting to kick in now so have just rubbed in some more of the magic stuff. Should it be called the bees or dougs knees.

Rebel, If they stick to the time table then I should be off at 10:40. Say 10 mins to the start line then 2+ hours to the fininsh. The + is the big question. Family were here today and I have been lent a Camelbak. This is a sort of flat rucksack and carries 1 litre of water so I wont have to carry my bottle in me hands as normal. It has also been suggested that I tie the flag to the pack so I wont have to carry that as well. Only problem is that I wont be able to rotate it for the best camera view.
