Redhat
In light of recent happenings which we all know of, I have decided to quit smoking. I know I shouldn't already, but I'm now focused on stopping.I have also decided to donate the money raised to the MacMillan (SP) Cancer Research. I hope you can find it in your hearts to donate. The test is to not smoke for 2 weeks, and then make sure I never do it again. If I complete the two weeks without having one, all the money raised will go to the hospice. Please PM me if you wish to donate with the amount you wish to send, and after the two weeks I shall pass the money onto Macmillan. I will begin tomorrow. Every little will help to go towards this great cause.Thank you all,Matt
-pops-
I stopped smoking in 1983. I was on sixty a day :o It wasn't easy but I did it. To everyone who smokes - you can do it - I did. There's no magic way of stopping but there are lots of assistants now like gum, patches and Zyban.DO IT TODAY!!!!!

cd108
Its been almost 6 months since i quit smoking, my grandad suffered from thoat cancer and although he was one of the lucky ones seeing him go through the operation as a 73 yr old man set me to really thinking. Ive cracked on 2 ocasions, both times whenI was out with freinds and I had a few drinks inside me and on both ocasions I did not smoke more than 2 or 3 cigarrattes. I was a 40 a day er and i did not use any nicotine replacement products. For those of you interested in giving up try this book, I was dubious myself at first. At first glance he apears to be another crack pot on a get rich quick scheme but all i can say is it worked for me..http://www.allencarrseasyway.com/
AlanHo
I do wish the death of my wife will sponsor others to give up the evil weed. For the last year of her life she was almost constantly fighting for breath - the last month was most distressing. Any smoker who ever saw anyone in such a plight would give up immediately if they had an ounce of sense.Let me set the record straight - I am a poacher turned gamekeeper. 22 years ago I was smoking between 60 and 100 cigarettes per day depite being fully aware that it was dangerous. I spent 4 years trying to stop - I tried converting to cigars then a pipe but found myself still smoking cigarettes as well, I tried nicotine chewing gum which just gave me a sore mouth and throat, tried the nicotine patches which did absolutely nowt, tried acupuncture which resulted in blood poisoning and eventually resorted to bloody minded will power which worked a treat. One night I decided to give it up. My wife, who then only smoked 2 or 3 cigarettes a day (just in the evening) reluctantly joined in and we burned our cigarette stock. The following day I set off for work in the car and found my hand fishing in my jacket pocket for the absent fag packet which was quite irritating. During the day I kept finding my hand involuntarily seeking the fag packet which escalated from being irritating to abso-bloody-lutely infuriating. My hand had a mind of its own - I wasn't even aware that I wanted a cigarette. It was then that I fully appreciated I was a hopeless addict and had to kick it - which gave me the necessary will power.I could argue that in my day we were less aware of the dangers - but that would not be true. Looking back through a grammar school notebook from when I was 15 years old I found a reference to a lecture given to the school by a respiratory consultant from Birmingham Queen Elizabeth hospital on the dangers of smoking. It made no difference to me - I continued to spend my dinner money on 5 Woodbines or Park Drive - such is the stupidity of youth.Nowadays we are all made aware of the dangers and it saddens me to see young people, especially girls, addicted to the weed as a consequence of peer pressure.Redhat - you have made a good start - but why wait until November 1st - you are kidding yourself. Also why only 2 weeks - you should stop now and stop forever - after the initial mickey taking by your dumb mates you will feel all the better for being a sensible and healthy non smoker.Your idea of getting sponsorship is great - Doug did reasonably well here and I hope you do the same. Alan.

don't ask
Someone on this forum irked me so much that I managed to stop my 3 or 4 a day habit - cold turkey - no problem!!! (for 3 months at least) - ended up a complete heap of sobbing jelly on anti-depressants.Anti-depressants finished a couple of weeks ago so am probably ready to try again. joysness
I started smoking at age 11 and smoked more and more as I got older. When I quit in 1980, I was up to about 3 packs (60) a day.I quit cold turkey and about 2 years later my Mum died of lung cancer, so I had no problem staying a non-smoker.My boyfriend smoked until about 6 months ago. He had tried to quit several times, tried the patches and gum but none worked. He finally joined a group that was quitting and got a Rx for Zyban. That did the trick for him.He hasn't smoked since and says he doesn't crave them either.I know he's doing better because his sense of smell is getting more acute. So, good luck Redhat, Mark2 and all who are quitting. Get help if you need to, but stick with it and I know you can do it.Your lives and health will only get better :flowers:edit for spelling
