I HATE MYSELF SOMETIMES!

I bought an AMD64 with a K8 mobo and another 512megs of RAM, for £205. Guess who put the DAMNED CPU in incorrectly and now the DAMNED pins are bent :angry: :wallbash: :wallbash: :wallbash: :shocking:

Now I've got to plead (sp? ) with Watford Elecs to fix it for me free of charge :mellow:

Rant over :D

EDIT: I got a message saying I posted more emotions than the board allows....LOL.

Bummer. :(

I was once working on an IBM Thinkpad (Stinkpad?) laptop, and I ripped the ribbon cable that sends data to the screen! Luckily (unluckily?) I was at work, so work paid, after a stern talk from my supervisor. :blush:

I still don't like working on laptops because of that! They seem like 3D jigsaw puzzles!

Are they beyond straightening out Redhat? There was a thread in PCA last year on bent CPU pins and after very careful use of some tweezers and running a credit card through the rows, vertically/horizontally it straightened the pins enough to insert them. :(

They arn't beyond repair, never thought of a card idea! Ill try it now! :D THanks for the idea!

They said they thought it would be unfixable and offered no replacement nor attempt at fixing it. My dad is going to have a go and if not, he's offered to buy me another... god I am actually spoilt  :ninja:

I sympathise with you of course, but in law you have NO rights in the matter. I would have been VERY surprised had they offered any compensation at all.

Well :D They rigged it and got tech support to fix it in (not totally legit, but I have my contacts B) :lol: ) but nothing shows on the screen. I'm thinking either a buggered CPU (which, because they now fitted it, they said they would replace! ) or this:

Does anyone know if a 250w PSU would handle this:

AMD 64 3000+

MSI K8 Mobo

1gig DDR RAM

CD/RW Drive

DVD Drive

Two HD's

I think 400w would be a wiser choice and it may be why your not seeing a display on the monitor. Does the monitor draw its power from the PSU or a separate power supply?  :unsure:

From the PSU. I was thinking the Graphics port would take power LAST thus why I can't see anything. It was late and PCW was the only shop open, so I asked a lady in there and she said "It's definately a faulty mobo".

Er yeah. Could be, [1] its brand new [2] don't try and sell me a new one. I'm trying a new PSU.

400? I was going to get a 300, maybe I'll opt for 400, or 350, if you think 350 would be ok? I'll have a look for a cheapish 400 now.

A little more information on a PSU Redhat. Personal experience from my own PSU and from reading reviews at Tomshardware guide and other review sites.

I'm not a technician by any means and others will correct me if I'm wrong on this. In theory a 400 watt PSU will be better than a 250 watt but it is not always the case in practise. Some lower rated but better made PSU's will actually perform better than the higher rated ones.

It is important for a PSU to be stable on both its input and output performance. Some of the cheaper ones can vary by quite a large percentage either side of what is written on the outside of the unit itself.

Volts/Watts/Amps are something that I get confused with at times but each output lead from the PSU is designed to deliver a certain wattage and amperage supply to the hardware its connected to. This needs to be accurate and stable at all times with a + or - of a small amount allowed for. I think this is generally 10% either side. Some of the cheaper units have been known to vary by 15 - 20% of this limit and then you get problems that sometimes are blamed on other items such as the RAM, graphic card or CPU.

Don't scrimp on a PSU. It may cause problems that could be minor or at the worst end of the scale, destroy your motherboard.

Modern systems demand quite a lot of power at times when everything is coming into use such as at boot-up, or if you are multi-tasking using several bits of hardware/software at the same time. If using a TFT monitor then the power demand is quite low but a CRT can be asking for 120-150 watts of power on its own before you take into account the graphic card/sound card/hard drives/USB modem and any optical drives you may be using.

Go for a high rated PSU of at least 400 watts and of good quality. At least you will know that its not the cause of any problems you may have, that are power related. Use a power lead to a separate source than the PSU itself especially if using a CRT monitor. :unsure:
