Crap Cleaner

Since I got 'Crap Cleaner' after recommendations from this forum, I have used it regularly. Is it my imagination, or could my computer be so much faster than before? I'm getting out of breath keeping up with it. Either it really is a marvellous program or I'm having hallucinations. I can't believe the stuff it clears out every time I use it.

It is your computer being faster :)

What's happening, is with all those temp files deleted, every time you open an application, say Internet Explorer, then it cache's less data, because there is no data to cache. End result, less data pulled from the hard-drive, less stuff loaded into RAM, loads faster. Not to mention, more available RAM. Enjoy :)

The only mistake I have made was to run the cleaner as soon as I had installed it, and wiped out all the cookies for logging on at sites. My recommendation is to install it. Then visit all your favourite sites, creating up to date cookies. Then open the cleaner and go straight to Options/Cookies, and drag across all the cookies that you want to leave on the computer. Then run it on a regular basis. I could not believe the amount of rubbish that it listed as having got rid of the first time, it must have run into thousands of items. I now run it every day, and it still shifts hundreds of items.

I'm a new convert to this amazing utility. I've read about it a lot so I thought I give it a go.

The first time I ran it, I think it was a bit overwhelmed as it had to do multiple scans to complete its processing. Took about ten minutes. It removed a HUGE amount of rubbish which was a bit of a surprise because, as you may know, I one of the "keep it lean, keep it keen" wallahs. Yes, my machine actually does run better now and I will be installing it on my other machines later.

Regarding losing cookies, yes, I lost all mine by a lack of forethought but, I don't really care. Any I do want to have will be put back as and when - I'll just have to remember to place them in the "keep" box.

So, all in all, highly recommened.

Thanks, andsome, for the reminder :) :)

Index.dat files are used by Internet Explorer to record information about Internet sites that you have visited and details of cookies being stored on your computer (the original "spyware" perhaps). It's safe enough to delete them.

For those who have had the program for a while, version v1.16.084 is available for download.  It installs on top of previous versions, and leaves your chose settings as they were.

version v1.16.084

When running CCleaner...

Is it ok to delete the index dat files ?

What are these files ?

They only get recreated.

But a cleanup of your habits is handy.

I have just tried CC, how do you save the cookies that you need as the first time I ran it it deleted them all. :wallbash:

Options/cookies and move the ones you want to keep over to the right hand window. the ones in the left will be cleaned out when you run the cleaner. :)

It is a one-time and a bit time-consuming process to move the cookies you want to keep. You have to go through the existing cookies list, which can be very long if the computer is a few years old. But it's worth the one-time effort.

If you have multiple computers with similar cookies you want to keep, you can save the cookies list by exporting registry key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\VB and VBA Program Settings\CCleaner\Options, then merge it with the registry of the other computers.

N.B. this will export all Ccleaner settings; you can edit the exported REG file, and retain only the CookiesToSave value.

I deleted all mine the first time I ran the program, but luckily whenever I had registered at a new site, I had saved my logging on details. I visited them all one by one and logged on. This created cookies which I then dragged across as stated above. Once is all you need. I now use the program every day, and the computer runs like lightning.

Like you I use ccleaner, coz it's so good.

However, I am not too sure about the Advanced settings for all those Cache entries. I am sure I am safe to tick them and thereby delete/empty the various caches. But what gets cleared out. What am I likely to loose.

At the moment I just have the Custom folders ticked, coz I have specified, from the Options tab, for the user name>temp files to be cleared.

Do you clear out all your Caches ??

The cache's are simply there to make stuff load faster. When you load a program, that program's cache's are also moved into memory. An example of what would be cached is all the thumbnail images on a web page. The reason this is all cached, is to allow those webpages to load faster. With the recent explosion of broadband, this is no longer an issue. But when one had dialup, a huge cache was a beautiful thing.
