andsome
The law has long been a complete mess regarding this subject in Britain. It is my opinion that anyone who enters someone else's property uninvited, has automatically voluntarily surrendered ALL rights, and should accept whatever consequences occur. It would be no good someone of my age p***y footing about, and trying to use so called reasonable force, my only hope is to lash out HARD, and do as much damage as possible. There have been too many prosecutions in the past of innocent people who have hurt a burglar whilst defending themselves. It is the same outside, if a gang of thugs tried to break into my car while I was at a traffic light, and I accelerated off and ran one of them over, I could well end up in trouble. The Grump
There have been too many prosecutions in the past of innocent people who have hurt a burglar whilst defending themselves.According to the DPP there as been only 11 prosecutions in the last 15 years. That does not appear to be many, when you consider the number that must be reported to the police every year.

ranger
It is the same outside, if a gang of thugs tried to break into my car while I was at a traffic light, and I accelerated off and ran one of them over, I could well end up in trouble. This brings to mind a night I had trouble with a gang of teenagers who attempted to steal my car, I was visiting some of my wifes elderly family in the Easterhouse area of Glasgow, my son was looking out the window and saw a group of teenagers (14 - 18 yrs approx) attempting to steal my car, I ran out shouting at them and they ran off, but the window was broken and the radio cassette stolen. I was cleaning up some of the mess when they came back and started threatening me while my son was there (he was about eight at the time) I told my son to get into the house so that I didn't have him to worry about, but he refused thinking he was helping by standing in front of me, my wife came out and dragged him in to her relatives house and I went into my car. At that they tried to attack me by trying to punch me through the window that was broken and started kicking the car etc. I accelerated forward and they ran after me, I then lost my senses for a moment and stopped and went in to reverse to try and run into some of them, fortunately I came to my sense before I hit any of them, I wasn't worried that I would hurt any of them, what went through my mind was that my wifes relatives had to live there and what would happen to them if I retaliated and also my wife, son and dughter were still in the house. I went to the local police station and reported it, all they could promise to do was send a couple of officers round when they became available, I wasn't there when the police came round as it was 2 hours later and by that time I and my family were home. Zfactor
In the US, if you do anything you better make sure you finish the job. There have been cases in which a robber was assulted by a home owner during the act, and then the robber turned around and sued the homeowner. If you think this is absolutely absurd, you will also be shocked to find out that the robber won the case.Lesson learned? Shoot to kill. deuces wild
In the United States you can shoot an intruder who breaks into your house. I have a 12 guage under my bed for that very reason.

And I'm responsible with my weapons - I look before I shoot. It's not our gun laws that are stupid, it's the people using them, and I take offense to your declaration. andsome
I too think that U.S. gun laws are over the top. There is no need for people to have guns. However you should as I said, be allowed to defend your home and family with what ever force you choose. If everyone was banned from having guns, then there could be an automatic twenty years minimum for being found in possession.
deuces wild
There is no need for people to have guns. andsome
You only have to look at the level of gun crimes in the US to see what I mean. I repeat, there is no need for anyone to have a gun. The more people who have a gun, the more the criminals feel the need to have one. I reserve the right to use whatever force is necessary to get a burglar out of the house, but I would not have a gun if you offered me one free of charge. The whole point of this argument from the UK point of view, is that citizens have been charged and punished for using what our weak laws call excessive force. To my way of thinking, if one or two young thugs were in my house, there is little point in me trying to reason with them, and then using only sufficient force to expel them from the house. This is ridiculous in the case of a person of pensionable age, being expected to offer to escort a burglar off the premises. it is equally stupid in my opinion to allow an infinite number of firearms to be loose in the country. NO THANKS.
