Toothpaste cancer alert

Dozens of toothpastes sold at supermarkets are at the centre of a cancer alert today.

Anti-bacterial cleaning products, including dishwashing liquid and handwash, are also affected.

Researchers have discovered that triclosan, a chemical in the products, can react with water to produce chloroform gas. If inhaled in large enough quantities, chloroform can cause depression, liver problems and, in some cases, cancer.

For many years chloroform was used to flavour toothpaste. In dilute form it has a sweet taste and gave a "zing" mouthfeel. What's more, it's cheap and doesn't rot your teeth like sugar.

Don't take these panic stories too seriously. I spent a good 25 years of my working life involved with things like this. Few, if any, were ever shown to be true.

Most probably won't remember the scare over cyclamates that was promulgated by some laboratory or other. This resulted in the banning of this sweetener for many years, worldwide. In truth, the "scientists" doing the work had been feeding massive does of this material to rats and one or two in hundreds of test animals developed cancers over and above what would be statistically expected. The amount dosed was equivalent to something like a person drinking 1000 one litre bottles of orange drink concentrate every day for twenty years to even get near the dose that was given to the test animals.

A friend of mine worked on the rebuttal of this faulted research and he said that you would have a bigger chance of drowning in the tidal wave (now called tsunami, of course) produced in Washington state if the whole of the population of China pointed their rears to the east and all farted at at the same time.

if the whole of the population of China pointed their rears to the east and all farted at at the same time.

How frequently does this occur? I find the prospect of this event quite frightening, not because of what it might do to Washington, but because our "leader" might be over there, getting his instructions, when it happens, and we would not like anything to happen to him...would we?

You really have to be careful. Adam only took one bite of an appleand look what happened. We've all been paying the price since.

Can you really imagine the dreadful consequences if this did actually happen? There's more than enough gas being produced here as it is with the election.

Hey Intratech.....here is another one for you to be worried about...Dihydrogen Monoxide.

Dihydrogen Monoxide (DHMO) is a colorless and odorless chemical compound, also referred to by some as Dihydrogen Oxide, Hydrogen Hydroxide, Hydronium Hydroxide, or simply Hydric acid. Its basis is the unstable radical Hydroxide, the components of which are found in a number of caustic, explosive and poisonous compounds such as Sulfuric Acid, Nitroglycerine and Ethyl Alcohol.

Each year, Dihydrogen Monoxide is a known causative component in many thousands of deaths and is a major contributor to millions upon millions of dollars in damage to property and the environment.

Despite the known dangers of DHMO, it continues to be used daily by industry, government, and even in private homes across the U.S. and worldwide.

What you may find surprising are some of the products and places where DHMO is used, but which for one reason or another, are not normally made part of public presentations on the dangers to the lives of our family members and friends. Among these startling uses are:

    * as an additive to food products, including jarred baby food and baby formula, and even in many soups, carbonated beverages and supposedly "all-natural" fruit juices

    * in cough medicines and other liquid pharmaceuticals,

    * in spray-on oven cleaners,

    * in shampoos, shaving creams, deodorants and numerous other bathroom products,

    * in bathtub bubble products marketed to children,

    * as a preservative in grocery store fresh produce sections,

    * in the production of beer by all the major beer distributors,

    * in the coffee available at major coffee houses in the US and abroad,

    * in Formula One race cars, although its use is regulated by the Formula One Racing Commission, and

    * as a target of ongoing NASA planetary and stellar research.

I got the stuff on my hands a while back and did not get it off in time.....my hands and fingers shriveled like prunes.

Oh the humanity!

Time for folks to take action.
