-pops- Posted September 1, 2005 Report Share Posted September 1, 2005 For years I've pontificated about sudden shutdowns of computers being, more often than not, due to overheating of the CPU.Well, for the past week the machine I use for video processing has been suddenly shutting down in the midst of doing its thing. I adjusted just about everything there is to adjust, and even re-installed the backup but it still behaved in the same way- when it was working hard rendering a video, it shut down. At least it was polite enough to tell me but it didn't tell me why.Why on earth didn't I realise the obvious?I removed the case this morning and discovered that the CPU fan had failed. -pops- Posted September 1, 2005 Author Report Share Posted September 1, 2005 andsome, this machine is a special quiet one, almost silent.expertec, the heatsink is one of those very efficient Zalman Flower things which, on slower CPUs, worked quite well without a fan at all. It will still work on not too onerous things at a temperature of about 60 deg but when it works hard, it zooms up to 75 in about ten minutes and shuts down.
