One thing though, I notice that the message regarding the fact that the forum cannot send e-mail is still there. The point is that all the missing e-mails arrived with me this morning. Over forty of themJust come back again, and can see that the e-mail message has gone. Great that all is now OK. Craig Posted October 8, 2005 Report Share Posted October 8, 2005 To be honest, I wasn’t expecting anyone to be able to access the forum.I've been working on transferring the site from the new server back to this old one so I can get the most recent version of my downloads of the site and databases.The new server is still playing up at the moment. However, I am not yet receiving email notifications. Perhaps that is what you were referring to when you said the DNS had not been updated round the world? expertec Posted October 9, 2005 Report Share Posted October 9, 2005 I'll try and explain some..."An IP address (Internet Protocol address) is a unique number, similar in concept to a telephone number, used by network devices (routers, computers, time-servers, FAX machines, some telephones) attached to a network to refer to each other when sending information."So the IP is the actual address of the network device, in this case the server that the forum is hosted on.However, if everybody had to remember numbers like 204.157.7.230 instead of names like neoplanet.co.uk, the internet wouldn't have got very far. :DThis is where DNS comes in. DNS stands for Domain Name Resolution. When you access a website by its domain name (ie, www.neoplanet.co.uk), the DNS server resolves the name to an IP address in its database, and sends you in the right direction. However, there are many DNS servers, and if you make a change to the details, it takes time before all the servers are updated (this is known as propagation).-------------------------------------------------------Move on to the server now...The server is located in the USA, with their hosting prices and exchange rates what they are, it's cheaper than hosting it in the UK. :rolleyes:What went wrong recently was this. The previous (and now current again) hosting was on a shared server, and the forum has grown to such an extent that all our resources were being used, resulting in slowdowns and other problems for the users. (See this topic).Because of this, we decided to move to a new, dedicated server that would be powerful enough to run the forum.The server was duly ordered and set up. This involved updating the neoplanet.co.uk DNS record to point to the new server, and then transferring the forum software, database, and uploads to the new server. I don't know how much data that is, but it's sure to be a large number of MB, or even GB..?Unfortunately, the folks who host the new server screwed up. They allocated us an IP address which had been previously used by spammers, and put on a blacklist. Therefore it was not possible to send any mail out from the new server, it was all being blocked because of the blacklisting.So Craig decided to move back to the old server temporarily, (that's where we are now) and we went through the whole process again.Who's done the work I don't know... it wasn't me! :D I think Craig did it.Enough for now...
