AlanHo Posted November 18, 2005 Report Share Posted November 18, 2005 From time to time - but with ever increasing frequency - IE stops with an error message that it has encountered a problem and needs to shut down and do I want to report it etc.This generally occurs when I am on a web site and open links therein. For example - I browsed to the Vodafone site and tried to look at various Phone specs - but after opening 2 links the error occurred. I went back on to the site and the same thing happens each time after I have opened 2 links. I am sure that the problem lies with my desktop IE because if I use Mozilla it is OK.I have tried a computer restore back a month - but that did not help.Any ideas ? -pops- Posted November 18, 2005 Report Share Posted November 18, 2005 I've more of less given up completely with IE because of problems like this on one machine.One advantage of using Firefox is that if it goes wrong, it is little effort to re-install to get things back to normal. AlanHo Posted November 19, 2005 Author Report Share Posted November 19, 2005 I have tried to repair IE6 but it will not let me - I get a message saying that the installed browser is a later version and installation cannot continue (or words to that effect). This is even though I have downloaded the latest version from the Microsoft site.The Mozilla route is not an option for me - I am happy with IE6 - I only tried Mozilla to prove that it was my IE installation that had gone cronky rather than a website problem.It looks as though I will need to do a reformat and clean instal of Windows XP once I summon up the courage and find the time. My computer has a few other minor problems that would be erradicated at the same time - so watch this space - I will probably find myself in deeper and hotter waters requiring further assistance.I trust no-one will now suggest the answer is Linux. AlanHo Posted November 20, 2005 Author Report Share Posted November 20, 2005 Thanks for the info on XP repair guys - I gave it a try but fell at the first fence.After pressing F8 to accept the license the next screen lists two drives G: and H:There is no C:drive listed where my Windows is installed and so far as Windows Explorer is concerned there are no such drives as G: and H:My computer has two internal hard drives. The first drive has two partitions C: 60 Gb and D: 60 Gb. Windows is on C: Data on D:The second drive has one partiton E: 120 GB used for photos and video stuff.I also have two USB2 external 120 GB hard drives used for back-up purposes (M: and N:).Because it did not show the C:drive with the current Windows installation I was not able to continue. prctr Posted November 21, 2005 Report Share Posted November 21, 2005 AlanHo, My sympathies in re the IE problems. I had similar symptoms at one point last year, but this involved Win2k. A reinstall of the OS fixed it, but the gyrations you've gone through, especially with the setup not seeing your C drive -------well, that is unsettling. I know you have the USB drives offline, and might suggest powering down E drive. (of course you have done already). And the BIOS is set right for all this? I will be watching to see how it turns out.
