LADYDEB Posted April 23, 2006 Report Share Posted April 23, 2006 Hi There,It's been ages since my last visit with you guys.....have been really busy setting up a new web site etc..just wondered if someone could help me with a little problem I have..The new web site is backed up on my puter....The puter has been acting a little strange to say the least just lately and I'm worried it may just be heading for a crash landing sometime soon.....Does anyone know of a really good programme I can use to copy a shadow of everything thats on my puter to an external hard drive????? That way I get to keep safe all the images and everything else thats linked to the web site.....Is it even possible to copy the whole thing?? I had the choice of version 8 or 9 when I bought, and following advice on here I chose version 8 because it was cheaper, and people couldn't see any advantages in Version 9. I DON'T regret this decision one bit. There have been one or two reports of teething troubles with Version 9, but I have NOT heard any complaints about 8. -pops- Posted April 23, 2006 Report Share Posted April 23, 2006 I, too, suggest Acronis Version 8.It will do backups for you and also make a clone of your hard drive which you should then be able to use as a replacement.What I would suggest is a better idea is to use Acronis to make a full system backup using Acronis Secure Zone on to your external drive. With that you can restore (or re-install) parts of a system or, easier, the whole thing. Even large hard drives can be up and going again in less than an hour.Before embarking on using Acronis, make sure you read up about it and also make sure when you do come to use it, that you make an Acronis Boot disk - without this you could well be wasting your time using the software at all. Keep this boot disk in a safe place (I keep mine inside the case of the computer it belongs to.)You'll have to shop around for Version 8 as it is getting difficult to obtain now.Edit:Amazon Marketplace are doing it for £10-61 here. As you have a web site relying on your computer, it is vital that you have as much safety backup as possible.It's not a sixth sense you have about a backup. One day you will need it, that is an (almost) certainty.You could always have a (regularly updated) full backup AND another safety net like the Synctoy. To 'image' or 'shadow' a drive, you will need something like Norton Ghost or Acronis True Image.I would recommend Norton Ghost for making full back up images, it will write to a wide variety of devices; IE CD's, DVD or tapes if you have them. It is not an expensive program but worth it's weight in Gold.Others consider that Acronis True Image is a good alternative but I have never used it so I could not possibly comment on it.
