The list of helpers would fill a page, so thank you where ever you are just now. I now need to get Thunderbird up and running.Health warning...Do not hold your breath whilst awaiting the outcome. I tried SuSE 10.1 as you know, followed by Ubuntu Warty, but getting a USB modem to work with it was like trying to pokie smoke up cats arse with a pin. After trying again with FC5 with similar success I got a Netgear modem/router and connected to the onboard ethernet socket . After a bit more fiddling and assistance I got it going. I must admit that I am also in awe of the fact that many of those people have been able to give me the advice in an understand able way and I have been able to follow that advice...and get some of it right. I did have a go at Linux with something that dear Mr Mouse sent me... but I just couldn't connect to the internet and if I can't connect then I may as well give up! :(My real purpose in trying to migrate to Linux is to support all those people who are prepared to give time and effort in keeping M$ from taking over the world, and at the same time get away from the M$ merry-go-round of "new improved OSs that you just can not live without". It is amazing to me just how many people and businesses are happy to put their heads in the lions mouth. Every few months yet another scheme is cooked up, which is often barely legal, which ties up the Windows user even further, to the pecuniary advantage of M$. I know that M$ can be proud of some of their early standardisation work, but to monopolise the PC OS business, as they almost did, to me was an unethical adventure that has not yet been abandoned.But then I'm just an old fashioned girl with and old fashioned smile..tra lah lah. etc. ;) Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

The trouble has been with the modem on the Linux machine but, not, as far as I know, with the kernel. It appeared the Firefox's DNS operations were ineffective, but, after I followed the advice of a Linux 'expert' to switch off the ipv6 settings in Firefox, it worked wonderfully well.Fired up with success, I downloaded and installed Thunderbird and had exactly the same timing out problem with that. The advice then was 'modify modprobe.conf to disable ipv6 totally', and if that did not work get the latest firmware update from Neargear's site. After installing the update I could not log on to the the modem, despite using the given user/password combination. So I tried to revert back by reloading the original firmware that had been backed up, and re-editing modprobe.conf back to its original. All to no avail. Of course between each trial with the modem it was necessary to reset the machine with the reset button on the back of the case.The consensus now is that the modem was "doubtful" from the start and maybe that was why it was so attractively priced on ebay!!!I have just got another router/modem this morning and so off we go again.
