catgate Posted January 9, 2007 Report Share Posted January 9, 2007 In the prison workshop the new inmate was puzzled as to why every so often one or another prisoner would shout out a number. When this happened the other prisoners would smile, or even grin. However when one particular prisoner shouted out a number the whole workshop would erupt with laughter.So he quietly asked a prisoner near by what it was all about.He was told that the numbers represented jokes. These jokes had been told so many times that they all knew the jokes, and so all the jokes had been given numbers so as to avoid having to ramble through them time after time. As a result of their familiarity with them the mirth had been reduced to just a smile or a grin.That seemed reasonable enough, but he could not understand why just one of the prisoners was able to bring forth great hilarity by this method.It was explained to him that, "It the way he tells them."
