My daughter's HP Pallion 9110 which was running (98SE was given to a friend of ours) who has opted to go on the Internet using BT and the Router supplied by them . I had installed AVG free 7.5 before handing it over. When she had a go live date I toddled over and did the installation but had problems. On speaking to the very nice Indian lady was told to turn off the ant-virus and re-boot the router. This worked. Now Morag tells me that sometimes , very occasionally, she can switch on boot up and go straight onto the Internet. Most times she has to re-boot the router or go through the shamozzle from scratch. Now I've was over there a few days ago and noted that when booting up AVG is doing a memory scan. Does it need to do this as it's monitoring in the background all the time she's on. I have a recollection of getting a pop up, some time last year, saying that my version of windows (98SE) was not suitable for the latest AVG.Then again.... It will not be as hole free as the latest, but then the newer viri will not be written for, and aimed at, W98SE.It was this sort of thing that finally pushed me on to Linux. Scarecrow Man Posted March 21, 2007 Report Share Posted March 21, 2007 Becareful with Avast. I am sure you can turn this off, but if a virus is found it sounds like the smoke alarm is going off. It has a very strange noise that emits from the speaker upon catching a virus. I have limited experience with it, but I did notice that to be quite annoying. I forgot to mention that it was a few years back that I used Avast, and the sounds we're only on an automatic scan - upon finding a virus.
