andsome Posted June 16, 2007 Report Share Posted June 16, 2007 The general consensus appears to be that most goods can be obtained cheaper by shopping on line.Our trusty Braun Oral B electric toothbrush had started to show its age, the battery would not hold its charge. I decided that I fancied a new Braun oral B Professional care 8500.The cheapest on line price that I could find was Amazon at £37.24.Next was Pixmania at £54.Then came Tesco direct at £54.99.Dental Shop were asking £73.Followed closely by Argos at £74.79.Boots were asking a massive £89.99.I picked one up with the weekly shopping at Sainsbury's for £27.49.The moral is not to jump to the conclusion that things are cheaper on line. An electric brush gives a much more thorough action than that achieved by conventional hand brushing.This has been demonstrated many times - you can easily do it yourself and I believe at one time the manufacturers of electric toothbrushes gave away a demonstration kit where you cleaned your teeth in the conventional way and then sucked on a "disclosure tablet". This contained a red dye which stained the plaque remaining on the teeth a bright red colour. You were then supposed to repeat the test later using the electric brush and see the difference. Think of it like this.., why do you think the breakfast cereal in the commercials looks so good..? , answer - because they lie , they use Elmers Glue mixed in the very little bit of milk so their product will be more appealing ... I had a condition called Lichen Planus, which if not treated carefully can lead to mouth cancer. My dentist advised me to use an Oral B electric toothbrush for a full two minutes night and morning. The specialist at the hospital gave me the same advice a week later. Every time I see my dentist she remarks on how clean the teeth are, and how healthy the gums are. Following the advice of these two experts takes me a lot longer each day than a quick flip round with a manual brush, so laziness does not even enter the equation. Did you state this previously..? No..!I did not need to state anything. I started a thread advising caution before leaping in to buy on line. The point I made was that this method of buting was not always the cheapest or best. You came charging in like a bull at a gate calling people who have different opinions on oral hygene to you LAZY. The thread was not meant as a discussion on the merits or otherwise of using electric tooth brushes.so laziness does not even enter the equation. #2 - Fact - Most people are extremely lazy..I feel sure that most of the people on the forum are far from lazy. Many of the older ones have worked hard all their lives in order to have a comfortable retirement. As I feel equally sure ,that many of the younger members are now doing the same thing. I think that I can safely assume that MOST of the members on here will join me in accepting your apology for calling most of us extremely lazy. (For those who do not own one the toothbrush vibrates when 2 minutes are up.) :DThe new one give a small vibration each thirty seconds, so that front lower, back lower. front upper, and back upper, all get thorough treatment. Not because of any cancerous threat!However, I must say that since I have been using an electronic toothbrush, my gums have been in much better order than they were before. There were areas which may have been considered as 'receding', :0 ... but now I can smile with width, being happy that they are all my own!!
