Irene Posted August 11, 2007 Report Share Posted August 11, 2007 I used to smoke cigarettes!!Gave up 22 years ago. Last one was 21:30 09/06/1986. Never had one since. Irene, take note :DFrom my experience, it seems that those who once smoked find it more offencive than those who never have. I won't allow it in our house or in our cars. It is like religion, The converts become holier than thou, and pour scorn on the unconverted, who of course are sinners. I smoked a pipe from my late teens until I was about 60 and had to go in and have my prostate rebored. I stopped a couple of weeks before the op. because of the interaction of smoking and operating tables. A few weeks after the op. I realised what a lot of money I had saved and so in my true Yorkshire fashion I did not buy any more tobacco. I have not given up smoking, I have just lapsed temporarily, I still have my Peterson and some 15 year old baccy, , and although it is too dry to smoke I do go and have a sniff at it occasionally.We had a managing director who was a "convert" and he sent all we managers a silly sign to display on our desks. It said on it "Thank you for not smoking". This was to encourage wholesale conversion. So I binned mine and made a similar one that said "Thank you for not breaking wind." Irene, take note :D Yes, I know. I understand.I was the worst of all smokers in my time!! I smoked at least 30 a day (and that is all I am prepared to admit to!). The problem for "ex-smokers" is that, at first you become a non-smoking smoker. Finally, if you are luckly, you become a non-smoker. The problem is that your nasal senses become more acute, so that's why we become a pain to existing smokers.I now just avoid placing myself in a position where I am subject to cigarettes. I used to find when smoking was allowed in pubs, that my clothes used to stink the next day, especially jumpers. It's great now to be able to have a night out and not smell of smoke the next day. Your sense of smell and taste does become more acute but that shouldn't mean that we should not tolerate others who still smoke.I hope I will always tolerate those who wish to smoke and not treat them like lepers as there are far worse smells, IMHO, and what's a smell between friends?
